So what's the deal with Hand Cancelling an invite? What difference does it make?
My invites are a single panel thing - nothing raised or anything like that...they have some inserts - but nothing that could possibly be damaged at all.
Is it a big deal?? I'm confused......

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
I would love to tell you the difference I have NO idea, but my mother told me I better do it and so did the post office, so I just might as well do it lol.. They do it for you anyway, and it doesn't cost extra, so might as well!

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
I've heard that invites are typically thicker...so on the way through the postal machines, they can get wripped, dirty, torn, etc....every get a thick/big card? Sometimes it's a bit 'beat up'? That's why...

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
and hand cancelling just stops it from going through the machine at the first place
BUT your invitation will still go through other machines and be stamped etc.

So even if they're hand cancelled - they'll still go through a whole machine process anyway?
Mine are going out probably tomorrow - once i get this whole thing figured out! :) My RSVP date is December 7th(didn't want the RSVP's to get lost in the holiday mail, becaues my mail service is HORRIBLE).

ohh noooo! lol, but I asked a few questions when I sent my STDs out... I'm thinking of sending them like late Oct., because I want them to have enough time to book rooms, but I'm still undecided lol

usually when the invite is bulkier..if its hand cancelled they ppl at the post office do it by hand, otherwise its put through a machine, and you know when you receive mail theres the squilly red lines by the stamp with the date it was delivered that the post office puts onthere, well thats how it will look through the machine...the hand cancelled stamp is round

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
Really makes no difference if you hand cancel them or just drop them off if you don't have anything really fancy on the envelope or inside the envelope that is bumpy or happens to not be flush.
Problem is if there is a buckle or a small bump somewhere in the envelope and it runs through the machine it will snag at times and rip or just get destroyed. If you have really fancy outter envelopes they will mark it all up (this even maybe the case with hand cancelling depends on where it is going)
I am doing mine via hand cancel due to the decoration on the envelope (will still get messed up but just not as much) and I will have a uneven bump in the envelope since my layers reach a small bump in the center of the envelope.
I hope i make sense IoI

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
ok so no one is saying exactly what this is. one person said they will do it themselves??
Is it when the mail person physically stamps the date on the envelope so it doesnt go through the machine?

That makes a LOT of sense - thank you!! I think i'm okay - the only thing raised on my invites is the lettering and that's not that huge a deal. People get them & throw them away - so what happens after I drop them in a box....who cares I guess?

it will look different and ppl think it looks fancier when its hand cancelled...when its put through a machine for it to get stamped then its long squiggly lines with the amount of postage and date...the hand cancelled stamp is smaller and its round with some writing around the edge of the circle on the inside.
If it goes through other machines after that its for other purposes not to get stamped by a machine

exactly, the post office does it by hand, and won't be put through the machine. When its put through the machine it might get messed up more, than if someone hand does it.

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
When it is time to mail your invitations, if you hand deliver them to your local post office window, you can request that they be hand canceled with a rubber stamp, instead of by a machine. It makes the front of the envelope look a lot more attractive without the large ugly black postal markings all over it. At our local post office they use a nice maroon colored ink for hand canceling.
I found this on one of the Invitation etiquette sites. I know we tried to explain but its as simple as dropping it off. and I think you can do it your self but why if they would do it at no charge at your post office.

Re: Mailing INVITES Question...
Jeri ( armyofbabies) had oversized invites...they got to everyone opretty much perfect/....except her parents...the mail man bent it cause he had the mail wrapped in a rubberband. but hers were fine otherwise
