I think it's usually $3-5 per person. Ours is built into our contract.

Re: Maitre'D Tip for 200 person wedding
Our final number was 186 and we gave about $5 per person. We were originally going to give $600, but our maitre'd worked so hard- we had a TON of DIY projects and no DOC- so we gave him $900.

$900!! wow. that is quite generous!!
I have a DOC - so I would imagine the Maitre'D won't be doing as much. I just can't comprehend giving that much money to one person.

I can't imagine tipping someone that much money. I know that is what you are supposed to tip but it is going to very hard to part with that money.

Re: Maitre'D Tip for 200 person wedding
our final count is 212 and even though they say 3-5 per person i think we are leaning towards $500
it is a ton of money, plus we have to pay the gratuity of 18% or whatever - where does that money go?!?!?!
if the matired is amazing and we need him/her to do a lot we would consider $650ish but i cant imagine them being that helpful....

Say what you will, that man earned every penny and it was still under the 'suggested' tip.
He set up every single DIY project we had- including our photobooth scrapbook stuff (which no one used) and our massive 2 table candy buffet. We didn't have a DOC, but Jose at JT stepped it up and we didn't miss having one.
ETA: 186 x $5 per person = $930!

That's actually a 'service charge' and just think about how many people actually work at your wedding- the kitchen staff, wait staff, valet, greeters, bathroom attendants- there's TONS!

I agree, but everyone does have their own opinion regarding tips. Some people can't afford paying $950.00 to one person, there are so many other people that need to get tipped that night besides them.

I agree. The whole tipping thing is so confusing!

Re: Maitre'D Tip for 200 person wedding
We had 120 people and gave $400 or $425 I can't remember
i would say giving $600 would be good for 200 people in my opinion. If they do an excellent job leave the envelope open for little extra

I think that if the Maitre'D deserved it and worked his butt off... why not give a generous tip. They are there to make sure everything goes smoothly.
I use to work at a very popular LI wedding RH and the Maitre'D did nothing.... and she would be the one walking away with the fat tip while the servers walked away with nothing....
