I looked for low cost trials but I don't care so much what I pay for the day of. I don't want to skimp on how I look. It has to be worth their while. With that being said I had one trial and I have one tomorrow and their day of prices are $30 and $150...go figure. It was more about whether I liked their style and if they knew how to make me up. I just didn't want to waste much money on trials, I'd rather go to them and not pay much til I figure out who I want.
My hair girl on the other hand, I love. She was recommended to me, a friend of a friend who is now a friend of mine who does my hair for everything. She charged me $45 for my trial (which with tip was $60) and charges $50 the day of. She always comes to me and when I come to her she charges me less. She also did my hair for my e-party ($45) and yesterday for bpics ($25) and a few other times and she's so sweet and reasonable. Bonus:she was in hs band with FH although I know her through my bridesmaid.

Is it just me or is anyone else outraged at the prices they charge for trials and day of for makeup? I mean seriously $200 for makeup (which doesn't include the trial, which is like another $75-$125)?? Some of them charge just as much as the hairstylist. Then I love how the price goes up if it is just the bride and noone else. I get it they have to travel and its more profitable if they book more people, but come on!! Okay vent over
Honestly I am not outraged at all. I was willing to pay $$ for a great makeup artist! I wanted to look flawless and amazing on my wedding day. My makeup artist charged $200 for day-of and $75 for her trials (I had 2). It was worth every penny. I used a different person for my b-pics, which although the makeup photographed AMAZINGLY well, I looked like a tranny in person. Very very fake. Not wedding glow makeup. That woman charged $100 for makeup. I didn't just want to look good in pictures on my wedding day. I wanted to look great in person, and that's what I felt I paid for with Chante. Just as a side note, I used to work in retail cosmetics as a makeup artist when I first started out in retail, and actually worked as a freelance makeup artist for a few years to make money. I used to get $75-$100 for a bride when I was 18-20 years old (I had 3 years of Estee Lauder schools 2-3 x a year with my high school job Origins) and this was 7 years ago! So I guess it just doesn't sound so crazy to me. I think you can definitely get good makeup applications for cheaper, and there's no shame in it. It all comes down to what's important to you and what you're willing to pay for. The overwhelming majority of responses to this post think $200 is a lot for day-of makeup, so I guess I'm the minority here, but it's how I feel!
I agree 100%, some people wont bat an eye at spendings THOUSANDS on a dress and to have a face to compliment that dress, 200 bucks is not bad. Good makeup application is an art..and I will pay for good art! :)
btw I love your trial and I'm looking for a good MUA, can you FM me the info. Does she do hair as well?

Re: Make-Up Prices Vent
My make up is $150 for me and $100 for a BM (this is high so I may contribute 1/2 toward the cost) but my make up trial is for free. Plus I have to pay travel costs because they are traveling from LI to NJ for me for an afternoon wedding! I know she does a great job and she works at Dior.

I am paying 75 for trial. I think that is fair because to be honest, sometimes the trial is like a 2 hr thing if you don't get it right the first time...
She charges 150 day of. She is coming from Brklyn to LI at 7am on a Sunday.
I think that is fair. And this would include airbrush if I want.
I want to look good and I do make-up so I am PICKY!

Re: Make-Up Prices Vent
I have to say that paying a lot of money for a makeup artist is simply because you are paying for the range of colors they carry and their travel time. That's pretty much it. I worked for Estee Lauder and with makeup artists and that's what they told me. It costs them a lot of money to fill up their makeup case with all those colors to be able to find the perfect blend for you for your wedding day. It is their livelihood and that's usually what they live on. They went to school for it and they are professionals. If you pay the money, you are paying for a pro.
Now....I haven't seen a look on here in ANYONE'S profile that I cannot do on myself for my wedding (excluding airbrush because I don't have the tools for that). If you are good with makeup, you know that you can do it yourself. Their skill isn't something that only they possess, you CAN do it yourself, the question is do you want to...? I personally think that I can and I will. I have two hands and I can re-create a look that an artist can do on my face. It's all up to you and how much you want to spend and how much effort you are willing to put into it to save some money. I did my makeup for two weddings and, not to sound conceited but..., i looked fab. It's all up to you.

I agree. I had one hair person tell me she would charge me $25 extra per girl to travel to me from one town over. I told her 'sorry but I'm not giving you $125 to drive for 5 minutes). For my make-up I found someone, $35 for the trial, $85 the day of. Hair person I found is $125 for me (charged me $50 for trial) and between $60-$75 for the girls depending on how they want their hair. If you look hard enough you can def find people with more reasonable prices.
Who did you use? i cant seem to find a good hair girl that is reasonably priced. Will she come to the house?

I'm doing my own Make-up. Forget paying these people! I've been wearing make-up too long not to know how to look good in make-up. Why pay $$$$$$ + a tip! I'll do my own thank you.

Good for you!!! I said the same thing to myself when the first person asked me who I was using for makeup!

I think the prices are absolutely ridiculous; I am doing my own makeup.
