Making a guest pay for their dinner??

Original post by akaMrsT

Is anyone toying with the idea of the same thing they did on Whose Wedding is it Anyway when people showed up that did not rsvp

The Coordinator was the one who handled it since guests with no escort card (or placecard) were told to see her. She told some guy that the couple requested that people who did not RSVP pay for dinner since the head count was sent in well in advance (and after the RSVP date). I am not sure if I could do it but paying someone to do it would be GREAT

I was in an OOT wedding (my sister and I were BM's) and my uncle had at least 20 people show up that did not RSVP for his wedding on Saturday

Granted, they were invited and if they show up I suppose, like my uncle did, the couple can grin and bear it. But how hard is it to fill in a name and mail a pre-stamped RSVP card

We called each person who did not RSVP with a card to ensure no problems.

Keep in mind some people will RSVP they are coming and no show.

After everything I went through with my wedding- the seating requests, then COMPLAINTS from the SAME people who made the requests...(that's right- the same people RSVP'd LATE)

To be honest, for future parties, if someone shows up who didn't RSVP, I will not have a problem telling the maitre D to work out cost with that person. I will not shell out cash for someone who just shows up. sorry!

I have seen this happen one to many times. Most of my brides request that I either tell the guests that they are not permitted to be there or make them pay upfront. Its so unfair to do that and so inconsiderate. Especially since u have to turn around at the end of the night and pay for the extra guests plates in cash.

At my wedding i plan on telling anyone who does not RSVP that they have to pay for it upfront. They have to give it to my Wedding Coordinator.

Interesting - I never heard of it until that show aired.

Is this something you are requested to do on a regular basis

It really makes you wonder if the guests assume it's some kind of wedding/barbeque and you can just throw an extra burger on the grill

I couldn't do that to my guests. To prevent that, we would have to call everyone that didn't RSVP to get their answer.

I'm all about 'teaching someone a lesson', however, I dont think making them pay for their dinner since they didnt RSVP would teach them s&&T!!! It would end up causing a scene, that would be unnecessary.

So, no, I wouldn't have them pay. Its a great idea.......but yet, very tacky

I dont think it is tacky for the reason that it is tacky for them to show up without RSVP'ing. That is the most tackiest thing that anyone could do. However, if one feels more comfortable with paying for 15 dinners for people that received there invitation but felt they were to occupied to send the RSVP, then that is a person's own decision to make. After seeing some of my brides go into their wedding money which they have received on that night to pay for the extra people that showed up, I have come to the conclusion that I will not let this happen to me.

This is actually a question that I asked the reception hall - is there a penalty if guests show up that we have not accounted for - and my hall (Fox Hollow) - said no, we charge them the same as others.

HOWEVER, I did go to other sites and ask the same question and most of them said, yes, we charge a higher amount for those guests that are not counted for in the final head count.

Would I ever ask a guest for money? No...BUT, I do have the BALLS enough to ask them to leave. Sorry, no room at the inn...it's enough of a burden sitting down and going through a guest list, but just SHOWING UP - OH HECK NO! Not on my DIME!

Well, thats you.....I just couldnt do it!

And IMO, if you sign a contract to pay a certain minimum, and you dont make that minimum, what difference does it make, you gotta pay it anyway.

So is it worth it to ruin my night b/c a guest doesnt want to pay for their plate? Not to me its not. I dont want any arguments on my night.....why would anyone??? I would let it go.....and worry about it afterwards.

What's the point of doing this? They most likely wouldn't give you a gift also In reality, would they stay after being told, 'OK we'll find you a seat. That'll be $247.58. Please make the check out to _ _ _ _'
I get the idea but I can't inagine it actually working. All brides should contact their non-responders prior to the wedding, about a day or 2 after the RSVP date to make sure the response card didn't get lost in the mail. We had a few people who claimed they sent the card the day they got it and we never received it. Oh well, just chalked it up to the USPS! At least we knew they were coming and it wasn't embarrasing for us or them when they went to the table and found no seats!
My mom called her people, my MIL called her people and DH and I each called our own people as needed.
I would worry more about the people that don't show up when they responded yes. That pi$$ed me off a lot more than a non-responder showing up!
