I just came back form the laundromat!!! I washed my oun wedding gown! I know you are all going to think I'm nuts. I just couldn't spend $250 to clean a dress that cost me $350. I read in 'Bridal Bargans' That you can do it yourself, so I did! Even the lable in the dress said wash in the tub.
By the way, it came out perfect!! I was terrified putting it ino the washer but I just did it before I lost my nerve. I'm so glad it worked out. I would have lost my mind if something happened. I know this is not for everybody,I just wanted to let you know how it went. I will follow some of the instructions I posed a few days ago about preserving it. I bought a box at Target, the kind they explained. I'm so pleased. Phew!

Just wondering, do you have any work on your dress (beading, lace, etc) and would that make a difference? Wow, I give you credit...I bet the people in the laundromat were like what is this whacko doing?? LOL

Yep, Got beads and crystals across the top front & back,and all around the bottom! Also buttons that are beaded that go all the way down the back. No lace. The laundromat was empty the few people I saw didn't know what I was cleaning!
I used Woollite(sp?) made for delicate cycle and Pretreated stains with Shout. Washed on delicate cycle. The bottom was filthy from all the dancing so I treated this well. No Drying it's hanging up to dry.

This post should be put up on the front page of LIWeddings, The Knot, Wedding Channel, should be sent to all high end bridal stores that want to charge 500 bucks to 'preserve' the dress....
I mean seriously, how do we even know that this exact procedure isn't exactly what those 'preservationists' due? Why are laundromats open all night anyway?! I envision a secret society of gown preservationists, convening in Bubbles 24 Hour Laundromat washing dresses in the machines without anyone finding out!!

Mistyeyed, I thought the same thing when I was putting it in the washer.
The book I read said most bridal shops just toss it into a washer anyway. Even if you have it professionally drycleaned and preserved,there is no guarantee that it won't yellow over time anyway.
Forgot to add, The book suggested testing the beads before trying this. Your supposed to put one of the beads/pearl in water for 10 minutes and see if it disintegrates. If it's OK yu can wash it!

It came out perfect!!
The book said you can wash Satin, taffeta,organza and tulle. Like I said, my dress said on the lable to wash in the tub!
