An unidentified man whom Suffolk police found mortally wounded in his car in Holbrook died this morning, and homicide detectives are investigating a possible link between the shooting death and a frantic 911 call that preceded it hours earlier.
There were few details this morning, as homicide detectives at the scene were not immediately available to discuss the case.
But police said overnight units responded to Patchogue Holbrook Road near Broadway for an apparent car accident. When they arrived, they discovered the wounded man in his car. He had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency units rushed the man to Stony Brook University Hospital, but doctors there pronounced him dead at 1:01 a.m.
Earlier in the night, someone called 911 to report that they were being followed, chased and shot at. Police have not released who made the call, which was made at 10:40 p.m.
Meanwhile, police closed Patchogue Holbrook Road for virtually the entire night while detectives investigated. The road was cleared about 7 a.m.
