Marriage and Finances

Marriage and Finances

My FH and I have talked about having one account for expenses and one account for savings once we are married. My worry is I don’t want to dictate to him how he can spend our money. For example, I hear my co-workers complain when their husbands go out for lunch or buy coffee at 7-11. As if their husbands have to ask their permission to spend $5. So what advice can you ladies share in terms of sharing finances?

FH and I have lived together for 9 years and have owned a house together for the last 4 of them. And we keep our own separate savings accounts along with a joint checking account, which we use to pay bills or buy groceries. This system has worked pretty well for us (we have never fought over money) so we'll probably continue it after we're married.

FH and I each have our own checking accounts and we have a joint savings account.

I usually just put a little of each paycheck into my checking account and that's my spending money for things like shopping, nails, going out with my friends, etc. The rest goes into our joint that we use for wedding expenses and will use to pay our bills once we live together. I find this much easier because FH will never question how I spend that money and the same goes for him.

Currently we have 3 checking accounts and 3 saving accounts. We have had a joint checking account for over 2 years and we opened a joint savings after our wedding. We are getting use to married life and at the beginning if the year we will have only 1 of each. Financially we trust each other and since I pay the household bills it will make my job easier. Take your time and figure out what works best. Also maybe you both need 'me' money every month, no questions asked.

FH and I are very independent, so we both have separate checking accounts. I like that I have an account with only my earnings so that I don't feel bad about the occasional shopping spree or lunch splurge. We do have a joint credit card, and we use that for grocery shopping and dining at restaurants, and anything we do together.

We will be setting a budget outlining all the bills that need to be paid, 401k contributions, and savings. Once that's done, we'll figure out how to spend what's left.

FH & I already have a checking and savings together even though we dont live together- its making paying for the wedding easier. now when we get married we agreed to put all of our money together, less 2% of our biweekly paychecks. This 2% will be different for us, and we agreed to keep that in our own accts. I have a joint account with my parents and plan to keep it open, god forbid anything, so 2% worked for us because it will still give us money to pay all our bills and put money into savings monthly

This is what we do as of now. We have a joint checking and saving (opened up to pay for the weddings). I like this system. We even use this account to go out for dinner or when we need something for the apt.

The only thing is i hope after we are married we can add more to the checking account or contribute $ into our joint savings. So we can go on trips or buy a house while maintaing our own personal accounts.

Finances can be so tricking and cause a lot of arguments.

FH and I have a house and keep separate accounts with a joint checking for bills. Eventually we may move to one account, but I want to keep it separate for now. That being said, we usually check with each other before spending a large amount of money, even if its from our own accounts. When it comes down to it, we realize that we both share expenses and its important to realize that all your money is kind of connected when you move on together, regardless of whose name is on the check.

This will def be a tough one for me and FH once we get married, he stinks at saving money but I also don't want to micromanage him. I think we would likely keep it the way we have it now, which is we split all the bills and he pays some I pay the others. We never keep a tally so we don't count penny by penny but just see to it that all the bills are covered plus we keep our separate spending money and I do most of the savings since I'm better at it, but I count it as a 'bill' so really it all becomes even.
