I just got my marriage license yesterday. The woman told us that the celebrant keeps the license after the ceremony and sends it back to her. After about a month, we should get the actual license in the mail. The thing is that I was told by my job that I should change my Social Security card and license as soon as possible so they can add my husband to my health insurance. They said that it should be done within a month of getting married. I also wanted to bring a copy of the license on the honeymoon as proof that we just got married in case we get comped. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the license back and if I just have a copy can I begin to change my name?

You will probably have the license back by the time you return from your honeymoon - we did. You can't change SS and license without it, but can do so right away with the proof. You definitely do not need it on your honeymoon. No one asked us for proof and we got lots of perks - make sure your travel agent puts down that you are on your honeymoon everywhere and definitely feel free to mention it!

Do you have to go to the town clerk where you live? Or can you go anywhere? For example, can someone who lives in Brooklyn get their license in Woodbury?

The license is a state license so I think you can go anywhere in the state to get it.

I sure hope so, because I'm a resident of Massachusetts getting married in NY! So if you had to be from the town I'd be in trouble. :-O
