I was wondering how many days before the wedding do I have to go to the court house to get a license? I probably have to take off from work for this depending on how many days I have.

Re: Marriage License
within two months of your wedding date! Check with your town hall, they might have a late night!

Re: Marriage License
Yup -- it is within 60 days - but, I think that you need to have it no less than 24 0r 48 hours before the actual ceremony.

Re: Marriage License
So it is good for 60 days? Another stupid question, do both of you have to be there to get the license or can one person go with all of the documents?

Re: Marriage License
Yes, it is good for that entire time frame .. And, yes you both have to be present with your documents in hand!

Re: Marriage License
great - my church insists we have the license to them by NO LESS than 1 week and FH is out of state and won't be able to come home until the monday before the wedding which they tell me is too late - looks like we will have to make an additional trip home to get it. Do you know if they are they 9-5 or what hours you can get the license?

Re: Marriage License
The hours depend on which town office you go to. I know that the Town of Islip is open from 8:30 - 4:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and 8:30 - 7:30 on Tuesday.
It is probably a good idea to call the office beforehand and verify their document requirements. The Town of Brookhaven requires birth certificates (or passports), while the Town of Islip only requires a driver's license.

Re: Marriage License
Yup - The different offices have different time... That is so bizarre that the church requires it a week ahead of time - can you call and explain that your FI is out of town?

Re: Marriage License
They claim they have strict rules and won't bend. It is the same principle that they let my my stepgrandfathers son get married and do their course by correspondence b/c they live across the country but we HAVE to attend a one day course IN PERSON. (oh and the course is held only 4 times a year (Begining of dec., march, beg of May and Sept.) the may and dec are generally finals time and the other times he is in school so now he will have to pay $200 to fly here (but I get to see him ) and another $100 just to take the course. Now I know why people put a thread about why do people get married at the reception site.

Re: Marriage License
I know ..... The rules that each church has can be a tad bit over the top! Don't get me started...

Re: Marriage License
You need two forms of ID per person - one of them has to have a picture, and both forms of ID need to have your birthdate... We used our driver's licenses and passports.
We went to Manhasset town hall and just as an FYI, they would not take a personal check (even though it said so on their website) -

Re: Marriage License
Definitely call before you go. One town hall website said a driver's license and something with your SS was enough. I called to confirm the hours and they said we HAD to have an original birth certificate and drivers license.

Re: Marriage License
Hmmm...such conflicting reports! I called Long Beach, (who have horrible hours), and they said all we needed was our drivers license!!
