Marriage License

Marriage License

Quick question about the marriage license. We are going to get ours in Manhattan since we live in NJ - it's just easier than driving all the way out to Long Island.

I wanted to double check with you all that this would be just fine. The websites all say that you can get your license anywhere in New York State.

Then, my question is, what do you need to do with it after the wedding? I know you are supposed to send it back - so does anyone have detailed information about what exactly you do? And how long it takes for it to return back to you?

Thanks!

Yes, you can get it anywhere in NY state. I'm not sure about the details of what to do with it after..

I wish I could help but we are having a civil ceremony first. The only info I was given was that you have to go two weeks before with birth certificates and drivers license and then they give you a list of judges to call and see when they are available too your ceremony.

Re: Marriage License

You give it to your officiant who takes it and sends it in (I guess to the town/city). Then you get your official marriage certificate in the mail (ours came pretty quickly - in about 2 weeks)

Our officiant is a family friend, so he will not be completing the rest of the task of sending it in...any idea of what we are supposed to do?

Ours was a family friend also, but he took care of it for us (but he's a judge and has married a lot of people, so he knew what to do with it). I guess you could call the town hall and ask them. We got our license in Huntington and they wre very friendly and helpful when we went.

When you get the license tell them that the officiant will not be completing it and they will give you all the information on what to do and where to send it to.

I got my marriage licence in NYC. When you receive it, it comes with an envelope to mail it back in as well as instructions on the time-limits, where you are allowed to have the ceremony and who is allowed to perform it. Unless you are having the wedding in NYC, the officiant just needs to sign the document and you throw it in the mail. I believe that they mail the marriage certificate back to you. (Unless you have a civil ceremony, in which case you receive the certificate right after your ceremony.)

Hope this helps!

Also, if you're going to Manhattan, make sure you have at least an hour. It's worse than the DMV lol.

THIS They will give you instructions.

I got my licensein manhattan. The new marraige bureau is a trip. It's so cool and there'sa chapel and you'll likely see brides all dressed up and getting married there. We had a BLAST getting our license. Our officiant sent in the ML for us and we got a certificate back maybe 1-2 months later
