You have to sign it with the officiant and your witnesses after the ceremony. It then gets filed with the county and you don't get your copy for a few weeks. your insurance may or may not add him with out the copy. Call them and see.

We signed it at town hall however it isn't valid until your witnesses sign it and the church or officiant stamps it with a seal and mails it away.

This!!
As far as the health insurance goes you can ask your co if they have domestic partnership. If so, then you can add him to your ins.

You don't get it until a few weeks after the wedding, after your actually married. We were married in the church and I added my husband before we left on the honeymoon. It was fine. We got married 10/20/12 and went on our honeymoon about a week later for 16 days, so I wanted to be sure it was done. I was able to add him, and had about 90 days (i think) to send in the marriage cert for proof. We got the marriage cert within a reasonable amt of time and I sent it in with plenty of time for the window of proof.

Re: marriage license
I work in Health Benefits. You need the official certificate to enroll a spouse onto your Medical Plan, not the License. You have 30 days from the event date (the marriage) to do that. So even though he won't have a Member ID# with the insurance carrier while your on the Honeymoon he will be effective once enrolled back dated to the date of the marriage, so if he had needed to use the insurance he would be coved even if a claim had to be reprocessed... Hope that helps.

Sometimes domestic partnership is hard to prove. Both names have to be on legal documents, bank statements, lease, title/deed, etc. Its a pain.

if you CAN do domestic partnership with your company, and add the health benefits- you are probably looking at a hefty 'income' tax on the benefits for the person who is not the employee, at least until the formal marriage. I guess it shouldnt be bad if it's only for a week or a month (not a tax expert, no clue how that works) but i have read that it can be up to $1500 a year.you can read all about this in the supreme court stuff for doma... :(

Agreed! Some insurances let you add your partner if you have lived with each other for over a year.

This! The dp benefits taxes are a KILLER. When I looked into this it was a little over 3k per year. Still cheaper than purchasing private insurance, though.
