Marriage License Issues

Marriage License Issues

I'm afraid I may not be able to get my marriage license. I was born in another country (came to US when I was 3). I am a US citizen and have a US passport. I've been an American citizen from as long as I can remember. My naturalization papers seem to be missing.

The LIW planning link says I need one from BOTH categories.

http://www.liweddings.com/planning/marriage_license/

Birth Certificate
Baptismal record
Naturalization record
Census record

AND

Driver's license
Passport
Employment picture ID
Immigration record

I've also read on LIW threads that all you need is a passport and driver's license.

Can you please clarify?

Can you please share what you took to the town hall and which hall you went to?

I feel like everything was smoothe and now that the wedding is less than 2 months away, we have all these small fires to put out. So stressed out.

Re: Marriage License Issues

YOU need to go downtown to the INS office and ask for a copy of your naturalization papers.

I just made an appointment with INS. Ahhhhhhhhh. It's so hard to get married. Sigh.

HA! Seriously I don't think it will be a problem! They only asked us for a driver's license....That's IT!!!!!! and my DH was married, brought the divorce and they didn't even ask for it! I would not worry. We went to the Queens Court house.

good luck!!!...also since you came at the age of 3, did you come here with your own passport or were you under your mothers, bc for young kids they used to be under their moms passport...If so make sure they look up your moms name bc they might have problems finding you if that is the case...If you came here with your own passport it should be fine otherwise

Did anyone else just need a passport and driver's license?

Were you required to show a birth certificate or naturalization papers?

I don't even know what the heck a census record is so I don't think I have that.

Why wouldn't your passport and birth certificate be enough? That's one from each list.

Your passport proves your a US citizen, and it doesn't specify that it has to be a US birth certificate.

I'd definitely go to INS just in case, though...

Re: Marriage License Issues

The point is not to prove citizenship, it's to prove age and identity. Do you have a birth certificate or baptismal record?

if you have either of those (or naturalization papers), that will prove AGE

drivers license or passport are picture ID's that prove identity.

since you are within 60 days, go to town hall now, and see if you have any difficulty... if you get intimidated, you can always go to another town hall for the next try

Seriously don't stress it. You don't need all of that.
You need one form of proof of age and the other is a photo ID. It doesn't matter whether you were born here or not.

What town are you getting you applying for your liscence in? Call them and ask exactly what you need and save yourself the trip if you can.

oh wait i thought you went and they wouldn't allow you with what you did have and were giving you problems. You should be fine with a passport and drivers license

I just called the office. They said passport and license were sufficient. Phew!

This is always the best bet when it comes to wedding planning. Just go straight to the source and ask directly. It'll save yourself the stress, esp in these last 2 months.

Glad it all worked out for you!!!

No, the LIW website said we need one from each category. I didn't have anything from the first category.

i think its different whether you go to a town or city clerk. We went to a city one in Queens and we only needed to show our Driver's Licenses...thats it.
