I posted this question on my original thread but I think its being missed.

FH and I got our license today....and I've of course been telling the world....

why do you people keep saying to me 'you know you're legally married now'. Its not legal yet....it has to be signed and filed.....am i wrong?

Re: marriage license question

you're not at all legally married...your witnesses and officiant must sign it the day you exchange vows and he/she [officiant] then fills out some other parts to it and mails it back in...so no, you are NOT legally married.

Re: marriage license question

You are NOT legally married in New York with just the license. You need the ceremony, the license and the witnesses AND you must have it for a day before you get married.

People said the same thing to me and my attorney (I work in a law firm) said that in NY it is 'a ceremony and a license'.

Ummm, because they're stupid????

No, you're not wrong. New York has a requirement that you declare in the presence of at least one witness and a person specifically authorized to conduct a ceremony that you are becoming husband and wife. A marriage license alone doesn't do that.
