marriage license - still haven't found an answer

I want to keep my first name, middle name maiden name and just add my FH's last name without a (-).
How can I do this?? and do I always have to sign both last names.

Sample
I'm: Mary Yellow flower, his last name is blue.
So, I want to be Mary yellow flower blue

Why is this so difficult??
I NEED HELP!!

Well, first of all...you can sign your name however you want. If you wanted to sign your name Ben Dover, you could (trust me, some of my friends have done this). You just can't print it out on any legal documents as such.

so you're middle name becomes two names then (yellow becomes yellow flower), is that right?

No. I already have a first name, a middle name and a last name. I want to keep it as is and just add his last name without a hyphen.

Legal name
mary ................ yellow ....................... flower Blue
----------- ..........---------------- .............. ---------------------
1st name.........middle name ..............last names.

Then I will sign as Mary Blue.

I don't think it's possible to have two last names in this country. You need one name, so it could be Flowerblue as one word or Flower becomes part of your middle name. I am not sure what other options you have.

Can you call the marriage registrar and just ask them?

Do you have a number. I keep calling 311 and I get transfer to different places.

I looked into this a lot, and I believe that you can write it however you want, but your 'official' last name will be the last word you write.

You can either combine the names without a space or you can combine them with a hyphen. You cannot make your last name two last names without a hyphen.

If you write it that way, the 2nd to last name you put down becomes one of your middle names.

I am going to officially cut out my middle name, I think, so I will be First Maiden New instead of First Middle Maiden.

I asked my dad if he was ok with me losing my middle name legally and he was fine with it. I have to ask my mom.

i was told that you aren't allowed to do that anymore.

I have absolutely no idea what this answer is.. but as I was reading this, I was thinking.. how funny would it be if that was someone's real name.

I know its totally unrelated and not even a little helpful, but just thought I'd share! :)

A friend at work today said that a friend of hers named their child Alice Blue

And their last name is Henry.

Yes, the child's name is Alice Blue Henry.

Another friend of hers said she's going to name her son Henry...

it was very funny at the lunch table... why would you make your little girl's middle name 'blue'??

I know FH's mom did something like that. She made her maiden name her middle name, and just signed her name with the initial in the middle with her married last name. i don't know how she did it though, if she had a middle name to start with.

I think you would just have to hyphenate on legal documents but then you could sign anything you wanted.

Re: marriage license - still haven't found an answer

You have four options for last names on the marriage licence:
1-You can both keep your current last names
2-You can take FHs last name
3-One or both of you can hyphenate your last names
4-You can create a new last name from your current last names

This is for NYS:
http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/married.htm

It explains it under the section surname.

According to the city clerk's office you CANNOT legally change your first or middle name b/c of marriage:
http://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/html/marriage/name_change.shtml

To make the name change you want you have to file it in civil court:
http://www.courts.state.ny.us/forms/namechange.shtml

Hope this helps!

You can do this but you have to go to court to do it legally. It's just a hassle but completely doable. I'm struggling with this too. I think I just may add my middle name to my first name, take my maiden name as my middle and then his name as my last. (His last name that is!) Could it be anymore confusing?

I agree with Valerie. That is the same thing I was told. I didn't want to hypenate either so I just took on DH's last name!

If you create 2 middle names, do you have to go to court?

I wouldn't care about having 4 names then. I'm not sure how it would fit on my SS card, but I guess that's a silly thing to worry about.

Yes because it's still changing your name.

Now here's a twist. Another way to do this is to get remarried and do it on your new marriage certificate. I'm not if that includes having the previously discussed four names though. I thought about doing this for our one year anniversary. Of course it's all a rouse just to get out of having to deal with the courts. Will research to see of it's legal.
