marriage license - still haven't found an answer

Original post by KYBride09

I want to keep my first name, middle name maiden name and just add my FH's last name without a (-).
How can I do this?? and do I always have to sign both last names.

Sample
I'm: Mary Yellow flower, his last name is blue.
So, I want to be Mary yellow flower blue

Why is this so difficult??
I NEED HELP!!

I have absolutely no idea what this answer is.. but as I was reading this, I was thinking.. how funny would it be if that was someone's real name.

I know its totally unrelated and not even a little helpful, but just thought I'd share! :)

I know FH's mom did something like that. She made her maiden name her middle name, and just signed her name with the initial in the middle with her married last name. i don't know how she did it though, if she had a middle name to start with.

FMIL did this with both of her sons, sort of. Her last name was Max and she wanted her boys to have both last names with out a hyphen. So both of their middle names are Max and it just worked out that way, kinda smart if you think aout it.

I think you would just have to hyphenate on legal documents but then you could sign anything you wanted.

My mom hyphenated hers but signs the two names separately. She still uses her maiden name on her medical license, her married name for most things outside of works since she legally did take his name but I know on her checks and bank account she has to sign both.

according to NYS you can make the new last name using both FH and your last name, you just have to put it on the marriage licese that way.
so oyu can be mary yellow flowerblue. I know of people who have done this...if you call the town clerk of the town you live in, the should be able to answer any questions you have.

I wanted to do the same but:

Okay I wanted to update you all. Went to get the license yesterday and you are not allowed by New York state to have Maiden Married as your last name unless you use a hyphen. So hyphen only or take his name. I tried, even filled out the form like that but it wasn't allowed.

Also, you are no longer allowed to move your last name to your middle name and take his last name. They did away with that a little over a year ago.

You can do a legal name change that requires going to court afterwards and change your middle name to your maiden name if you want to but that will change your birth certificate.

decisions, decisions......

So, I can't take his name if i don't hyphenate?
That stinks. I am not giving up my last name- all my professional stuff is through it. I guess I have ti change it legally later...
