Re: MARRIED 08ERS

Oh God I don't even know! The problem is that DH's family is HUGE on the holidays and there are a lot of them, and as for my side, it's just me, my parents, brother and grandmother.

For the past 2 years, we have been spending Xmas day w/ his family (my family is always invited). Christmas Eve is going to be harder, b/c both families do the same thing and it's tradition for both so I am not sure what we'll be doing this year! Thanksgiving is another one... not sure where we are spending that one! Easter is the only one that his family isn't big on, so we'll prob spend that one w/ my side. GRRR!

DH is from MA and that is where his family is so we try to split it up & take turns as best we can!!

The Jewish holidays will be hard. Some of them are 2 nights which works out, the others will prob be with my family since they live closer.

Hanukkah-one night at my house and one night with his family

Thanksgiving-I have no idea!!!!

Thanksgiving we will spend with my family because DH's family isn't much into the big dinners and everything. (Party poopers) And then we'll spend Christmas Eve with his family, Christams morning with my parents and sister, and Christmas dinner with the rest of my family. New Year's we always spend with friends.

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

This still isn't official but we may just have a Christmas Gathering for my family and my SIL on the 21st of December. We kind of want to spend our first year as a married couple alone. Also it is a lot when you have to visit everyone between Christmas Eve and Day. We still have to visit DH's sister and then we also have to figure out when we will see his parents (they live in NC).

We did a few years where we visited everyone which I love them don't get me wrong but it is soo much traveling.

Thanksgiving is still up in the air but I have a feeling we won't be going to NC either being that we will be there in Oct for SIL's wedding. I love my family and in laws a lot. I wish there was a compromise because we are the ones that are always traveling.

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

Well we've been doing holidays together for a few years now so we have a system. Thanksgiving is dinner at my mom's house, my entire extended family always goes there. His aunt and mom does TH dinner but it's super small, so we only go for dessert. Then we do a second dessert/drinks at his dad's house.

Christmas is busy also. Christmas Eve is at my aunt's house on LI with my whole family and christmas day is go upstate to his dad's early and have breakfast with them and then have late lunch/dinner at his sisters (where his mom is). Easter is usually just my aunt's as his family doesn't really do anything special.

So, for this reason our holidays are NEVER relaxing and we've grown to dread them. Sad but true.

I know it is sad because by the time you visit everyone you are just so tired. I never really had much alone time with DH on the holidays. Don't get me wrong I am grateful that I have family to spend holidays with but there has to be another alternative. That is why I am going to try this tradition with having it a few days earlier. We will see how it works.

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

we started last year after we got engaged. we are going to alternate thanksgiving dinner; last year it was at his mom's (i was totally traumatized by that dinner ) this year will be at my sister's - I planned it so that we are there the same years as my other sisters.

christmas eve is always at my mom's, and christmas day we drive to the bronx and spend time with his dad's family; last year we did this and then ended up stopping by my parents house and his mom's house (but he still lived there, so we stayed). so not sure about christmas day but we'll definitely be in the bronx at some point.

I'm lucky because my whole family is out in LI and so is dh's mom. we don't have to run around that much even though we're coming from queens.

i can't WAIT for christmas and to put up a tree and decorate, even though school is ruining my life.

Dh's parents and sister are in Georgia, so he's pretty much stuck with my family!

DH is so over it already because we've 'running around' for a few years now trying to fit everyone in that he wants to just stay home completely. I told him nice try.

But yeah, your idea is smart. If we had a house then we'd have both sides over to ours, but we only have a 1 bdrm apt in the city, no space and no parking, so I don't see many people showing up to our place .

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

we do what we always do xmas eve at dh's sister's house, xmas day at my parents or brothers. What will have to happen when we have kids is alternating xmas day at my bro's, parents and our place.

Turkey day we are doing in our apartment since it is big enough.

we may do thanksgiving.
BUT for Xmas, we have NO IDEA!
I think we will go to his moms on the Eve and my side on the day.

I cant wait for the holidays!

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

we have been spending holidays with each other since we started dating 7 years ago. our families live about 5 minutes from each other so it works out when they eat at home. my in-laws tend to eat out sometimes so that makes it harder to split the holidays.

we always have to eat at both families. luckily my family eats a little earlier (around 1:00/2:00) & DH family eats a little bit latre. we just have a little at both.

To be honest with you...I give DH the choice but we have a unique situation. DH's dad lives in Florida and his mom's family is nuts. I ask DH where he wants to go and he says my parents house. He can't take the family drama anymore!!

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

our families are 1000 miles apart

We will be flying to NY to do thanksgiving with my family, because that's the big holiday my parents host. (we did thanksgiving with my parents last year too)

Christmas is the big holiday for his family where they all drive out 5 hours to his grandparents house and I went last year, and we will go again this year.

We will probably have our own little Chanukkah at our apartment with our China and new holiday dishes.

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

Well i am not married yet but i will be soon and we have been doing the holiday thing together for a while now.

Thanksgiving used to be at his mom's every year - his whole family came in from wherever - but they moved to florida last dec so i think this year we will go to my aunt's house where my family goes, then to his grandparents' house for dessert.

christmas eve is usually at my sister's but she is moving most likely so i think we'll do it at my parents' house this year? and then christmas morning we usually go to my mom's for breakfast and then to fh's aunt's house but hopefully this year if we go to my mom's on christmas eve, we can have christmas morning to ourselves. i hope fh's parents come up this way for christmas this year so that we can see them!

being interfaith makes this very easy! the only holiday we miss is turkey day and we alternate each year.

Re: MARRIED 08ERS

No earthly idea. We just bought a house so I hope to have Thanksgiving. His sister is due to give birth around Christmas so his family will probably spend it in the hospital. I don't have much time left with my mom and grandma so I want to spend it with them. THAT'S gonna be a problem.
