Related question - I think....
Our bestman was given some kind of paper at the church from the priest. He said it was a certificate. (he held on to it and we moved so I don't have it) What is this? And also the town clerk said that the priest is supposed to mail the license away and we get something in the mail. So what is this paper that the priest gave us?

Kate, the certificate from the church is just proof that the wedding occurred in a church. If it was a Catholic wedding it is proof to them that it was a Catholic marriage in the recognized form of the sacrament. The priest mails in the signed portion of the license you got from the town and then the town mails you your official license.
