I don't know what the protocol is but FH asked if we could get married at city hall because currently he does not have insurance and he wants to be added to mine. If we went to city hall to get married, will the chuch find out and get annoyed? I am not really sure how to go about this.

I don't know how to answer your question but have you looked into FH being covered under your insurance through domestic partnership?? If you have been living together for more than six months then that might be a possibility.

Re: Married at City Hall
My parents were married at City Hall and later renewed their vows in church. It shouldnt be a problem, the city hall marriage is akin to going to the town clerk to sign for the marriage license...

No there shouldn't be a problem. I would talk to the pastor and let him know that is what you guys want to do. The most they may ask is that you bring your marriage license/cert when it is done..etc
I really dont see why it would be an issue

Re: Married at City Hall
I would think if the church didn't know ahead of time they would know when you didn't bring the marriage license - when you go for a marriage license they do a check for previous marriages and your city hall one would come up. So make sure, because sometimes the church will call it a vow renewal instead of a marriage ceremony, and you may have to go through a different kind of pre-cana for people who were already married, although that's usually for people who were married to someone else so who knows. Either way, I would definitely talk to the church before... I had the same issue and we registered as domestic partners and I am now on his health insurance through that so try that first (check your policy, including riders to the policy, to see if domestic partners are covered).

Re: Married at City Hall
Some churches may have a problem with this.
Be forthcoming with that information when you first start your pre-cana or meet with your priest early on.
We were asked if we had ever been married in the past- whether for immigration or other purposes.

FI and I were contemplating doing this as well for the same exact reasons, but decided not to. I do believe that if you do this, you will have to tell your church ahead of time and then your actual wedding would be a vow renewal ceremony.

Thanks girls... I may tell FH to take some vitamin and not drive or do anything remotely dangerous for the next 6 months..

You can register as domestic partners and he can get the coverage that way (I am a lawyer and I know this to be a fact).

My parents were married by an officiant at Watermill. They were married in a church 5 years later, my mom is not even catholic.
