Married in courthouse prior to wedding..

Wondering if anyone else is getting married in the courthouse prior to the actual wedding?
We are getting married in Minnesota in August, but to us it makes more sense to 'seal the deal' here in NY prior. I don't really know much about going about this, And I guess my whole thing is do we do this privately? Make it a family/friend event? suggestions please!! :)
