HI I am buying our house with FH before we get married so it will be in my maiden name for now. I want to change it to my married name once we are married, but the lawyer said it costs about $300 to do so and is fine if I leave it in my maiden name?? It just seems odd to me. Anyone have any input?

Re: married or maiden name on deed
I bought my house before I even met DH, so the deed is in my previous name. It's no big deal - if you decide to ever sell the property, you just have to sign both names on the paperwork.

Re: married or maiden name on deed
I bought my house 12 years ago with my former fiance who passed away in 1996. The deed still has my maiden name as well as my former fiance's. My lawyer at the time told me it would be $150 to change the deed (to take his name off) but it wasn't really necessary to do. She said just to be sure to keep an original copy of his death certificate with the deed so if I ever decided to sell the house I'd have no problem. I'd imagine as long as you have your original marriage certificate it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: married or maiden name on deed
My DH and I bought our house 1 month before we got married. I have my maiden name on all the paper work. My lawyer also said it cost $$ to change my name on the deed. I don't think it really matters, it's still you!

Mine has my maiden name on it too. My lawyer said it wasn't worth the money to pay to have it changed. He said that when we go to sell this home we can have things written as 'Jane Smith', formerly known as 'Jane Jones, ....'
