Married outside of church

Married outside of church

I'm torn between getting married in my church or on the beach. Catholic priests will not marry outside of the church, so if we did the ceremony on the beach it would be by an officient.

Does anyone know what steps must be taken to get the church to recognize a marriage outside of the church?

Confused...any help would be appreciated!

you might have to get married in your church, and then for your wedding have the beach or vice versa

The Catholic church won't recognize a marriage performed outside of the church. You'll need to go through pre-cana and get married again in the church.

yes, that is true.

that is also why a catholic priest won't perform a ceremony outside a church

I had the same questions not that long ago... It seems that no, the church will not recognize your marraige if it is not performed INSIDE of the church... I had a big problem with this because My FH and I feel that getting married outside among your friends and family and confessing your love for each other, reciting vows, and still having a religious ceremony is just as spiritual as being inside a building (church). The only thing that bothered me about this was that there might be an issue when we have kids and we go to get them baptised. I was told that just as long as you 'promise' to raise your children catholic, you won't have a problem... IDK how accurate this is, but if you are looking for an officiant, lemme know- Father Dave Grainson has spent so much time talking to me on the phone and explaining things to me. He is an ordained Catholic priest who realized that the choice not to get married was not for him. He is a vendor on here- check him out- it explians all about him on there. We are officially meeting with him on Monday, but he seems so wonderful so far. The decision between the church and vineyard was the only major stress that we endured so far in the planning and I really think that you have to go with your heart on this one. There are ways to still make it a very spiritual ceremony based around both your religions and your love. Please FM me if you have any questions or just need to chat - I'm being honest when I tell you that I really lost sleep over this and weighed the options many times. Good Luck hunny

So if i choose to get married outside of the church, in the future could i go ahead and take the pre cana classes and have a simple ceremony within the church anytime after my wedding? IS this acceptable?

Yes. My cousin is going through this now (taking pre-cana after being married for 6 years) and a friend of mine and her husband wer married at city hall and 2 years later had the church ceremony. The church frowns upon it though and your pastor might not be willing to do it for you.

The only way to get the church to 'recognize' your marriage is to be married in the church.

IDK how this works really, my sister was married by a priest outside the chruch and since had a child and my nephew was baptised in the catholic church. I was also under the impression that if you are not married in a church its not recognized by the church. But how would the church know after you are married, you still get a signed certifiicate by the priest?

this is true!!! they will def give you a hard time- the questions they ask you when you first meet with the priest is whether or not you have been married before...

also, FH actually emailed the diocese of rockville center on this issue (getting married outside of the church) and he went on this big thing like 'i was taught that a 'church' is a group of individuals who come together to worship' the catholic church's response is that in order to preserve the sanctity of the sacrament of marriage, weddings must be performed inside the church building. you can have an 'american' catholic priest preside at your ceremony- however, do not be guaranteed that it will be recognized by the church. the whole thing is bogus to me... if it were up to us we would be married outside on a beach... however, our parents are very religious, we are doing it for them b/c we respect them and the fact that they brought us up in this religion.

That is the same issue I'm having now My Fiance and I are both Catholic but are not getting married in the church but we went to our church and are waiting on a response on if we could attend pre-cana and get married in the church (just the two of us) and than have our wedding at our ceremony location. Hoping for the best!!

Re: Married outside of church

We got married on the beach in FL in November, by a retired Roman Cathoic priest. It was a legal marriage (and religious) but it is not recognized by the Vatican until we convalidate it. We're not too sure we ever will convalidate...maybe some day, doesn't really mean that much to us (and yes you can still baptize your children if you aren't married in the church...I've done LOADS of research on this!)

Re: Married outside of church

We are getting married outside of the church at our reception site (The Royalton).

My fiance is Jewish and I am Catholic. We met with the monseigneur at St. Agnes (my church). Our marriage will be recognized by the church but they need to apply to the Arch Diosese to do it outside of the church. However, it must be done indoors. You can't have a wedding on a beach with a priest. It must be within four walls. (Why I don't know....)
We also have to go through pre-cana classes as well even though my fiance is Jewish.

Call your church and ask all of your questions. That's what I did.
