Re: Martha Stewart
I think it was $250k which is nearly nothing to her, especially in comparison to what she lost.
I feel worse for the people that worked for her and invested in her company.

Re: Martha Stewart
She only saved 40/50K from selling the stock a day early.... All in all she probably lost about 250K, but by using the insider info. and selling the stock when she did, she saved herself from losing an extra 40/50K.
It's a drop in the bucket for her....

Re: Martha Stewart
The SEC thus is asking us to believe that Martha Stewart, TV show host, corporate president and directors, and multi-millionaire risked her reputation, livelihood, and fame to avoid losing the whopping sum of $45,673.
I found this.............OMG it was really for 50 grand. That is CRAZY

Thats why I feel its likely that she didnt do it...or if she did she shouldnt have her entire life ruined (along with the future of all the people that work in her company) over something like this.

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
i think this whole thing has gotten so out of hand. she should pay back the 'ill-gotten' gains and be done with it. her life is already ruined - her company has tanked and her board of directors met yesterday to propose taking her name off of the company. damage done - they should let her move on!!!!

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
I do agree that Martha was unfairly targeted to make a point by the SEC. They wanted to make a headline case out of her.
However, I dont agree that what she did was nothing. A lot of stockholders that do not have access to brokers with ears to inside information do not have the chance to sell before a stock price plummets, and lose lots of money. Think of the average person who could have lost their life savings when the Inclone stock fell. She was trying to get around the system using her connections. It is not fair, and illegal. If all rich and powerful people could do insider trading w.out penalty, the average stockholder would be at a huge disadvantage-we would basically be funding the gains and taking the losses.
She lied, and got caught. If she had not been dishonest w. investigators (changing phone messages etc) she would not be here now, they would have used her to hang the broker.

I had this exact conversations with my sister the other day. I FULLY agree with you although I do feel bad for her. Her being high profile I think they are taking it out harder on her. Personally it doesn't affect how I feel, I still get her magazine and like her stuff

It may have been nothing compared to what she had, but she was given AMPLE time to come clean, many many chances to say 'I wasn't exactly truthful', and she would have walked away with a slap on the wrist. But her ego just continues to ruin things for her.

That's what bothers me! She was given a couple of opportunities to admit guilt and plead guilty to lesser charges, but she didn't take them.
As I understand, Martha's not in trouble for insider trading, the issue is that she lied to the SEC, she tried to cover up her actions and conspired to cover up her actions. For this, she should be punished as anyone else would be.

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
Pretty much.
She sold her shares in the ImClone stock, I think it was about $50 or $60 grand. She was accused of lying about why she sold it to the feds.
But because of that money/shares she's lost millions from investors pulling out of her own company.

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
Am the only one that is happy shes going to jail. The difference between other people doing it and her is she got caught. She a mean Biatch anyway!
Thats why I feel its likely that she didnt do it...or if she did she shouldnt have her entire life ruined (along with the future of all the people that work in her company) over something like this.
I would think this as well...but she was sued by a gardener for not getting paid minimum wage...he sued for $50K and she fought him and had Turkey Hill declared a farm and therefore min wage doesn't apply!!! all for $50K...I wonder how much it was in legal fees...
also on 20/20 the jury said that the woman she was on vacation with at the time said that when Martha hung up the phone with the broker that she turned to her and said 'Isn't great that we have brokers to give us this information' (or something to that extent)

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
She's an idiot and got what she deserved.
I mean even if it was only $50,000. That kind of money is more than some families see in lifetime.
To me it's not the amount at all. It the fact that she kept lying and lying thinking that money and fame would get her off the hook.
An average person would have had it a lot worse than she HAS had it so far and a HELL of a lot worse than Martha Stewart will ever receive as punishment.
Frankly I say put her in an average cell and let her be someone's B!tch for a year or two.
You did the crime now do the time.
.... That is a very good thing...

Re: Martha Stewart..$50,000
That is a damn shame...$50,000...that is probably how much her shoe collection costs........that is crazy....i think the courts had to send a message that corporate america cannot keep fleecing people and getting off with nothing......then people would be too scared to invest and that would lead to bigger problems................damn shame, you would swear she was broke.........why is the the rich feel the need to scam more than you and I..
