Maternity Leave

Maternity Leave

Other than what your company gives you, do you file for short term disability when you go on Maternity leave? My company used to pay for short term disability, but now they are not so I would need to pay towards it if I wanted to keep it. I was just curious if I needed it for maternity leave and what is NY states policy on short term disability?

Hope you guys don't mind me asking on this board, since you've all had babies I figure I'd ask the experts!

TIA!

Re: Maternity Leave

New York State disability only pays $170 per week - usually 2 weeks before the due date and up to 6 weeks after, 8 weeks for c-section. I find it interesting that your company doesn't pay for NY State disability since I believe it is mandated by law!

Short term disability insurance helps to pay you a portion of your salary while you are out on sick leave. If you can get it then keep it. NYS disability stinks!!!The company insurance will help give you a bit more money during your leave for 6 weeks. NYS Disability is required by law so you are probably talking about the private disability insurance that some companies give their employees which is in addition to the NYS stuff.
