I work at a law firm, I'm not an attorney though, I'm 'non-attorney staff' according to my company. Attorneys here get 3 months maternity leave at 100% pay! Non-attorneys get 6 weeks - the first week of which you have to use your own vacation time.
This seems completely unfair to me.
What kind of maternity leave does your company offer you?

Re: Maternity Leave
We get FMLA - which is up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. If you don't qualify for that, you can get 11 weeks of short term disability.

That does seem unfair, but 6 weeks is pretty standard for most companies. I get 6 weeks maternity paid, then I can use my vacation time.

Re: Maternity Leave
I get 8 weeks at 1/2 pay, but I can take up to a year off without pay if I choose.

Re: Maternity Leave
We can take the FMLA without pay but the 6 wks maternity is deducted from those 12 wks. Even still, we aren't guaranteed the remainign 6 wks off, it's up to my company's discretion.
What I think is not right is that the attorneys get 3 months off at full pay!! Who's to say their baby - or themselves - are more important than me and my baby? Isn't that prety much what it is saying?

Re: Maternity Leave
Wow...that is screwed up!! I'm an attorney at a firm and I know we get 12 weeks paid leave and then, possibly, another 4 weeks disability at 60%. That applies to all women employees, attorneys and staff.
It seems to me that maternity policies should not discriminate based upon job title....

Re: Maternity Leave
I'm in NJ, so we get 12 weeks FMLA and 12 weeks NJ FLA.
(One bonus point for Jersey!!)
So if everything works correctly without complications I can have 24 weeks off with job protection (but not paid unless I fill with vacation and sick time).

Re: Maternity Leave
We use our sick leave accrual. (I earn 12 sick day a year, which is carried over from year to year.) I can be out for 6 months, with pay!!

Re: Maternity Leave
I get 6 weeks paid for regular delivery and 8 weeks for a C-section. Plus and additional 4-6 weeks with FMLA (unpaid ). But i can also use my carryover vacation, vacation, sick time and 'sick bank time' which is leftover sick time from past years. So I will probably be able to be on leave for a good 3 months.

Re: Maternity Leave
I can use up all my sick leave and annual leave as well as comp time, and then I can use the FMLA, which has recetnl been negotiated for 16 weeks, I do not qualify for disability becasue I am a federal employee and we cannot tap into state funds. So, I'll probably have about 3 months paid and then 3 months LWOP. It's never enough!

Re: Maternity Leave
we get 6 weeks paid and then FMLA at 12 weeks UNPAID Most people save up there 3 weeks vacation to tack onto the 6 week vacation and sometimes will leave early on short term disability if their drs say they are 'too prgenant' to work..lol..and we get 8 weeks 100% short term disability pay( if your approved)

Re: Maternity Leave
for maternity leave, we must take our sick days ( we get 12 per year) to get paid. we also get FMLA unpaid without insurance coverage. it makes things difficult.
what is this about NJ FMLA???? can you tell me more (i'm in NJ)? i've never heard of it & many women are out every year on maternity leave from my school.

Re: Maternity Leave
We get 12 weeks, not paid. I got the 6 week disability pay of $170/week! Needless to say, I had to save up to have both of my children.

Re: Maternity Leave
Wow! Your leave sounds great to me. I am an attorney and I get NO paid leave. the only thing I can collect is NY state disability. I need to come work at your firm.
