I have a job and get minimal medical benefits but I just got married and once all the paperwork goes through (which could take a while), I will be under DH's insurance.
My question is, should I tell my boss when it all goes through? And arent you supposed to get extra money added onto your salary because they arent paying for insurance anymore?

Re: Medical Insurance/Job question
It shouldn't take a while. Youneed to get added on to his policy within 30 days of the qualifying event which in your case is marriage. You need to call them up and get on the insurance asap.
Not all employers offer reimbursement for not taking the insurance. It's a benefit not part of your salary. Some do, but not many. I used to sell this stuff years ago.

If they dont reimburse you for it, I would keep it as secondary insurance in case your DH's insurance doesnt cover something.

Re: Medical Insurance/Job question
My FH is going on my insurance the first day I am back at work after the HM. I already spoke to my HR dept. about it. All I need to do is bring in my marriage license and he's automatically added on that day.
for what it's worth, my FH found out from his employer that he will be getting an extra $80 a month when he goes on mine. But not every company does that.

you should also check w/ your employer about enrollment dates (and limitations). I had to cancel mine within 30 days of my wedding ('life event') or else i would have had to keep it until the next open enrollment.

Frankly... if your paystub has a deduction for MEDICAL or something along those lines (right where the FED and NYS tax deductions are)... you should not have to pay for Medical if you cancel it.
But who knows. I am going on my wife's plan cause she gets free medical. My job makes you pay through the roof... so my choice is easy.
Ill be saving close to $150 a month for my 'single' plan after taxes. God only knows what family at my job costs.
It is a VERY small business (just me and my boss actually) and I dont have to pay anything myself for medical. I just have heard that if you are getting medical and then cancel it, it is saving the employer a lot of money so maybe a small portion can go into my salary.

you should ask... the worst your boss can do is say no.

Re: Medical Insurance/Job question
why dont you pose it as you arent sure if you are going to have FH go on your insurance or you go on his, and you are just trying to figure out the all the information so you can compare and make the choice that is better for you guys... that way you will know all the pluses and minuses up front... an your boss will just give you the info without making anything akward...

I think that you may be able to negotiate that with him. Can you find out what the employer is paying for your benefits. Come up with a number in between. Since it's just the two of you, this may be a good alternative. Also, if it's just the two of you, your plan may not support keeping one person on the medical and that would be a whole other problem for your boss.
