Meet the Parents - a nightmare tale

Meet the Parents - a nightmare tale

SO my family travelled to Rhode Island this weekend to meet FH's parents. I was very nervous, obviously. I love my father but he can be VERY judgemental & he was CLEARLY coming to check these people out.

They met during the day yesterday, briefly. We had 8 pm dinner reservations. FH & I brought my family to the restaurant. As we walk in, the Maitre'D tells FH that his sister is there and he makes a face. (This is a place we go to often.)

FH has a 21 yr old sister who is a full blown, falling down drunken lush. As we sit at our table, she comes over. She is in the tightest, see thru little dress I have ever seen. She was there with a large party. My father raises an eyebrow & shoots me a look but I ignore it.

We proceed with our evening & over the next hour, she starts doing things like SHOUTING at us across the resturant & toasting us. Clearly, she was getting drunk. I go to the ladies room just before dinner arrives & I find her in there. She is sitting on the counter and can barely hold herself up & strangers are asking her 'Are you ok honey?' I was mortified. She sees me & perks up telling me how much she loves me, etc...

As I leave the ladies room, i tell her to walk. I cannot carry her, I am 7 1/2 months pregnant. She proceeds to FALL BACKWARDS onto a waiter & send a tray of food flying. The entire restaurant is now staring. I literally walked away & left her there. I walked back to the table& told FH to 'do something.' My father is freaking out. Now the Maitre'D brings her to OUR table, pulls up a chair & seats her with us. Her 'friends' don't want her anymore. She speaks utter nonsense & profanities thru our dinner, passing out at times. She is on her cell phone & starts SCREAMING at her date who left her & says 'come back here & pay my tab. You know we're POOR! We can't afford sh!T!'

FH's parents say NOTHING. FH is laughing, he thinks its funny that she's so drunk. I was near tears. She goes to the Ladies room & I tell FH to follow her. He didn't. She took a digger onto someones table, knocking over their drinks.

As we leave the restaurant, she is demanding to drive. Oh, did I mention she had MY CAR????? Her car is in the shop so FH gave her mine for the night. (He bought me a new car recently, so I have 2 cars until the lease is up on the old one) My father sees the valet pull my car around & FLIPS OUT on me saying 'the girl is clearly a drug addict. When she crashes and kills someone, you will lose everything, You will lose your home, You will be liable!' He is of course, right. FH' s mother says 'she's not driving, I am.' She drives my car home. The lush REFUSES to get in the car with her mother or father, so she comes in with ME, my dad & stepmother!!!! FH says 'meet you at home!' and walks away & Leaves me with her. We were 1/2hour away. She is screaming in the car, demanding to be brought to a bar. She refuses to give me directions back to the highway so we get lost. My father was ripping his hair out.

Needless to say, SOMEONE owes me an apology. My father called at 8 am this morning & said 'we've seen enough. We're headed home.' He didn't even want to go to breakfast.

I told FH this morning how mad I am. He says I'm over reacting. I saw his mother & she said 'getting angry solves nothing. What are you going to do? It's who she is.'

I told him that I am telling the BM & staff at our wedding to cut her off.

WHAT DO I DO???? I am devastated, horified & scared for my wedding.

ETA - to make matters worse, my CAT died yesterday. He was only 5.

Wow. that's crazy and embarrasing. I'd be more upset with your FH than with her. I woudn't take that crap from him.

Oh my goodness!! This has got to be the most horrible meet the- future- in- law story that I have ever heard. Your family deserves an apology. FH should have taken care of her because it seems as though your FMIL has given up on her. What a way to make a first impression. You do not need the added stress of having your parents dislike your FIL's... you are planning a wedding & having a baby and you need to think of yourself first. Maybe you can talk to FH and explain to him why he should call your parents & apologize.

I forgot to mention that her drinking & behavior needs to be addressed b/c if not I would be scared to think of how she will be at your wedding.
Will your FH think that it's funny if she acted this way at the wedding? I'm sorry, I have a strong opinion about disrespectful behavior not being addressed. I hope everything works out ... hugs to make you feel better

What in the world was this girl thinking Didn't she know she was meeting your family And for her family and friends to just sit there and act like that's normal behavior Well, maybe it is normal for her

I cannot blame your dad at all. My dad would have left that night and probably taken me with him demanding that I not marry into such a family.

First of all, to you. I'm so sorry this happened. I do not think you are overreacting.

The reality of the situation is that your FH's sister isn't a 'lush.' She is an alcoholic, and his family is seriously codependent (as is he). She really needs help, which is a process that his entire family needs to also go through.

I'm so sorry this is happening. I hope your FH and his family start to see that this is a serious problem and try to get her help. It sounds like they are enabling her. (ETA - This does not mean that they are bad people and this is a bad family AT ALL. This means that his sister is sick... this is an illness that touches everyone in the family. It's tough to accept, but it does sound like they all need some help / counseling because of his sister's problem...)

Again, I'm soooooooo sorry that this happened to you. I'm hope your parents will come around and will not hold this against you and your FH.

WOW I am terribly sorry about that and that was completely not acceptable. I enjoy to have a few drinks as well as my fh. His family are drinkers but the main thing is NONE Of us would ever do what she did. She clearly has a problem and the family is doing nothing about it and as stated above is a codependent of this behavior. If they do not do anything now while she is kinda young she will be completely a mess by the time she hits 30 better yet she will be producing little bastards most likely (sorry nasty thought but most likely true).

I wouldn't invite her to the wedding and honestly its FH's call but if it was up to me or even my fh we wouldn't invite someone like that at our wedding if that person couldn't handle their booze.

i'm so sorry doesnt it suck when we realize its not just our fi we're marrying, but it's his family too...

sorry girl, cutting her off would be a good idea, though if she has friends/family that allow her to act this way, she'll get her drinks through them..

you need to have a heart to heart w/your fh and tell him how you feel w/out getting him defensive

good luck

First off, here are some for you for surviving the ordeal.

Second, your FSIL is an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a disease that without treatment will lead to death - of someone.

Third, you need to have a serious discussion with your FH about his sister and how to handle this at the wedding. Sure, he thought last night was funny, but how would he feel if it was the wedding cake she knocked over? Would it really be funny then?

Fourth, it appears that FH's family is in a state of denial regarding FSIL's drinking. You will be doing them a service if you start discussing alcoholism and the long term effects on FSIL, as well as the devestaing effects on the family. I urge you to find a local Al-Anon meeting to go to and get information that you can bring home and discuss with FH & his family.

Wow, I don't blame your dad for leaving. Mine would have tried to take me with him. Her behavior is absolutely crazy. It is truly sad that your FMIL threw her hands up and that your FH laughed about it. Forget the wedding, will your FH be laughing when FSIL drops the his child you are carrying one day because she is drunk (I know you would never let her hold them, I am just hypothetically speaking). She has serious issues and needs serious help. And the fact that her parents did and said nothing is outrageous!! Good Luck!!

WOW. That is some set of events. I would tell the bartenders at your wedding not to serve her at all. You have every right to be upset and I can't blame your parents for leaving. FH should be more supportive and should consider where you are coming from. I would sit down with her and definetly tell her how you feel.

Thanks everyone for being on my side...

Yes, his family knows she's an alchy. She has been in & out of rehab for years. She is unemployed. She has been arrested. She is a MESS. I think they have just given up on her.

I can't not invite her to the wedding; she's a freaking bridesmaid!!!! I told FH that I picture her knocking over the wedding cake & he got defensive & said she won't act like that at the wedding. He said we have bigger problems (we do, in honesty, have to worry about my mother ruining my wedding as well.) I am so stressed out.

I took the car keys back today. I told him that she is not allowed to drive my car. Period. Before I was with FH, I spent 5 yrs with a guy who got into a DWI & killed his best friend. I have NO sense of humor when it comes to this.

I think maybe I need to sit down with her & my FMIL & tell them my concerns.

This is truly an outrageous event! Unbelievable. Bridesmaid or not - she would not be attending my wedding after such a display. And honestly, I am a little shocked that your FH said 'we have bigger problems...' - well how about this problem? Sit down with her & FMIL??? That sounds like a job for FH - not you.

Good Luck!

Re: Meet the Parents - a nightmare tale

Whether or not his sister accepts treatment, the family (the co-dependant non-alcoholics) STILL need treatment... perhaps even more so than if his sister responded to initial attempts at rehab. His family isn't dealing with this well AT ALL.

However, there is only so much you can do. I do feel that you need to be encouraging your FH to talk to his family. This is not something he can take lightly (as he is). He is in denial, and he needs a wake up call. The whole family does. There is only so much the family can do as well... but they CAN help themselves, and that's the step they need to take next. They are very intent on HER having the problem, not realizing they aren't helping her OR themselves...

Agreed that you (and your FH) should go to an al-anon meeting and get some information. They can point you to counselors, etc. who can help.

Again, even if his sister has been in and out of rehab, the rest of the family still needs help as well. This is not a disease of one - it's one that affects all involved.

Good luck to you and your FH!

Agreed - it is absolutely NOT your place to be confronting your FSIL and your FILs... To be honest, the entire family needs to talk to a counselor who can help with any sort of intervention (or the decision not to intervene further)... Like I said, the whole family needs to talk to someone.

Re: Meet the Parents - a nightmare tale

So sorry for what you are going through. You and the baby do not need the stress of all of this. His family need to envoke some tough love. Stop enabling her and cut her off. If she won't accept help then she has no intention of changing. You need to get you and your baby far away from her and her dangerous behavior. You and your fh need to sit and adress the situation. His laughing at it is not a good sign. Good luck and at the wedding just give her picture to all the bars with a do not serve note. If she makes a scene then have her escorted out.
And I am so sorry about the loss of you cat.
