Meeting with HR

Meeting with HR

I have a meeting with HR at my current company on thursday to discuss career advancement. If i cannot find another job, I have to try to move up where I am working currently. I will try anything once.

I need some questions to ask the HR representative that will help me to find out more about career advancement.

What are some good key points to mention? I don't want to come off negative, or that I am only interested in the money, which it really comes down too.
Thanks,
Scott

Unless you are in social service work, noone and I mean NOONE is going to think you're working for them for any reasons other than money...True, you don't want to drive that point home too much, but you don't want to down play it either...You'll find a balance...

Ask what types of jobs are available. What kind of training would be in order. What kinds of compensation comes from advancement (salary, vacation, perks, etc.) When it might take place. If you would be replacing someone. If you would be creating a new position.

I agree....they will if you speak of money, thank you for your honesty, everyone knows thats what it's about, THEY wouldnt work there either if it wasnt for the right money...ask them what you have to do, what skills do you need to promote yourself to a better position...what attributes are they looking for etc..

I am not going to go near the compensation question. I think I am known here for asking about money...So I am going to steer clear of that question. My company is very cheap. It doesnt treat its employees that work hard and bust their butts very well. It seems like they only treat you well if you kiss butt and or are in certain groups, working under certain managers. I am not in those groups and I don't have one of the favored managers.

These are some of the many reasons that I want to leave my current company. It is going to very hard to stay positive during this meeting, but I will try. I have to do this for myself and Danielle too. If I stay with my current company that is.

why are you meeting with HR? does your boss know about this? be reeeeeaaaallly careful with HR, if your boss does not know, he/she will know you are looking/dissatisfied after your meeting.

My boss is the one that told me to contact HR. I just had my review and I didnt get promoted again. So my boss told me that if I was interested we would change my career advancement form on my review and thaen I should email it to my hr rep to put it in my folder. He said she will contact me to arrange a meeting, and that she did.

hmmmm, that's interesting...

everywhere i have worked the hiring managers have the power and HR simply execute the orders. did your boss explain why you didn't get promoted?

I think that when you go into your meeting you should keep it on a positive note most definitely. Let them know that you understand your review and that at the suggestion of your supervisor you wanted to meet with them to discuss career advancement within the organization.

Some questions/comments to consider:

What type of career tracks currently exist within the organization that you feel are a good match with my current qualifications and experience?

Let them know that you are interested in obtaining more experience and training and find out what they offer.

What positions are currently available and how do they fall in line with your career advancement - are there any that are a match and can you get a copy of the job description?

Good Luck!!!!

Oh and by the way - I agree with you about not talking about the compensation just yet - wait and see if there is something they can do for you. If there is a new position with added responsibility - then you can discuss additional compensation.

Yes because my role hasnt changed. It hasnt changed in over 3 years. I knew I wasnt getting promoted again, that is why I have been trying to get out of this company. Now I figure that I better make my time spent here more productive because I know lay offs are coming soon and I cannot afford to be out of work....So I have to save myself, and I think this will do the trick.

Re: Meeting with HR

I forgot to mention that there is a big project in the works that is going to begin at the end of the month...Its not really a project but more like a new system that is going to be company wide after my group tests it out.

So right now managment doesnt really know what jobs are going to be available but I do know that alot of the groups will be looking for more people, to do testing and what not. I have already put word out with another manager that I will be willing to help out with any work that comes available.

sounds like you are doing all the right things to protect yourself. if layoffs are pending, i would be careful not to get too 'demanding' and 'overbearing' about advancement, but do exactly what you are doing - show you are a team player and will help out where needed. that should save your job. once the other people are let go, that is when you go back and say 'i have done, this, this, this and this and am interested in filling the position of this person.'

you sound on top of things, don't worry. keep looking outside the company, but show interest while you are still there. show them you are a problem solver and can make contributions that affect their bottom line

Good Luck but make sure you do not become a thorn in there side because when lay offs come they will remember.

Yes i know...I am going to try to stay positive from this day on. I am going to try to fix my past but if I cannot then I will try to prove to upper management that I am here to work and I will do anything it takes possible to advance.
