Meeting With Priest - What To Expect?

FH and I are meeting with the priest next week. He is really looking forward to it but for some reason I am kind of nervous. Can anyone tell me what your first meeting was like?

Thanks!

Re: Meeting With Priest - What To Expect?

hahaha i had asked a few friends (not on liweddings) what to expect and they totally freaked me out!! we're living together, and they said that he will ask about premarital sex, ask if and how often we go to mass, and have us sign a form saying that we'll raise our children catholic.

i was soo nervous!! luckily, it wasn't bad at all! he just talked to me (we're long distance and FH was back in sc) about what marriage is, and asked if i had been married before and if i'm going into this on my own will. i did have to sign a form and one of the questions could be interpreted that we have to raise our children catholic, but we'll see....

good luck! it'll be fine!!

It wasnt too bad. He asked us about ourselves. we had to answer some questions about our relationship and why we wanted to get married. I hate being put on the spot like that!

By biggest fear was that he was going to ask if we've had premarital sex...and well, i cant lie to a priest thankfully he didnt!!

at our first meeting with our priest, he spoke to us together and we filled out some paper work...we went over what requirements we will need, such as birth certificates, i need a bit more b/c it is not my church...then he asked to speak with each of us individually and asked some personal questions about ourselves...he explained he does this so as to check and see that we are honest with each other, etc....i was nervous as well, but it was fine in the end...the whole process is kind of interesting...we happen to have a realy nice man who is our priest...i hope you do as well ...HTH

FH and I went a few weeks ago. I wasn't raised Catholic or any religion really (mom is Catholic, dad is Jewish). FH (Catholic) wants to please his parents by getting married in a church so here I am getting married in a church!

We met with a Deacon who asked us questions both together and separately. Together we were asked basics like parents names, their religion, our occupations, our address (we live together but I gave my Dad's address as my home address )

Separately, we were asked if we were related to each other , if we were physically able to be married (I assume they mean are we physically able to 'procreate' ), are we getting married on our own free will, do we agree that marriage is til death and do we agree to be faithful. FH also had to sign something basically saying that he will continue to practice Catholicism even though he's not marrying someone who is Catholic.

I thought the whole thing was interesting to say the least! Good Luck!

Re: Meeting With Priest - What To Expect?

FH and I are both Catholics that are practicing, invovled in the parish and have all our sacraments... that definitely speeds up the process and the paperwork! If this is not yoour case (particualrly inter-faith, even Christian, but non-Catholic) involves a dispensation and other paperwork... your priest will explain everything you need to do.

Basically, we set the date and time of our Mass. The priest then asked basic information: dates of birth, parents names and religion, sacraments received and where, our occupations, etc. etc. the priest will then ask you to leave the room and ask your FH questions and then when he's done, you go in. BASIC questions just ensuring that you are not being coerced into the marriage, etc. etc. NOTHING to worry about.

He also went over the Pre-Cana requirements, how to go abotu setting that up and our options there, rules regarding wedding day logistics (flowers, photo, etc.)

That was a bout it. We set our rehearsal time with the parish secretary. Try to get ALL your questions answered at your first meeting. Priests are very busy people and depending on his schedule, it can be very difficult to set up another time when you would like it.

GOOD LUCK!

Don't tell them you live together if you do. And if you do live together, make sure your answering machine doesn't indicate that you do. They called our apt. to set up a second meeting and luckily we had the generic message.

Our first meeting we both were scared $hitless!!

But it wasnt even half as bad as we though it would be. he asked us about our lives and out families, asked about our relationship (how long we have been together, etc.) nothing crazy personal. Then asked about children-if we had them how would we raise them. We didnt have to sign anything saying we WOULD raise our children Catholic.

I think some churches vary. Our priest knew that we lived together, that we HAVE lived together etc. and he didnt even bat an eye at us.

Good Luck

Re: Meeting With Priest - What To Expect?

FH and I are currently not living together. He is in VA and I am here on LI. But I was hoping to somehow get settled in VA before the wedding and then stay up here next summer while we finish last minute things. I have a feeling he is going to ask us about how we deal with the long distance and whether I plan to move there before the wedding. Premarital sex questions also make me nervous.

But on the plus side, we are both Catholic and made all of our Sacraments. We're meeting the priest on Thursday at 10am (way to spend V-Day morning!). I will let you all know what happens. Thanks again!
