melting old gold

Does anyone know a place that will melt Down gold and use it to make something else? I have my mom's original engagement ring (stone fell out of the setting and my dad replaced the ring for their 10 th anniversary, they're married 31 years this year). I want to use the gold to make my wedding band, I've called a few jewellers and they've all said you sell the gold and get a credit toward the new gold. You're not getting your gold back because the old gold needs to be refined. Any thoughts?
