Well, you don't need a diagnosis of a disorder for therapy...I've been in therapy for 3 years without a diagnosis, but a psychiatrist will diagnose you before prescribing medication.
You are right about diagnoses for therapy. I think I just was thinking in terms of insurance coverage. Many companies don't cover therapy but might cover partial or a certain # of visits. Then you would need something on paper. I was in therapy years ago with a diagnosis of 'Acute onset depression'.

Re: Mental Illness Poll
I am no longer treated for depression, but pangs of anxiety get me sometimes. I just have to teach myself self-soothing strategies or find other ways to vent. The gym helps. Sex helps. Sex at the gym is a non option.

Re: Mental Illness Poll
I think therapy has been stigmatized too, and there are too many stereotypes about neurotic New Yorkers, especially. I really think that therapy is about helping a person live his/her best life. Most of us could benefit from it.
I suspect that I have mild ADD. I don't have any negative effects from it (I have 2 advanced degrees and have held the same job for a long time). But I find that I need constant stimulation, can't sit still and have a terrible time focusing. It's gotten worse this year since I don't have the structure of being a classroom teacher. I don't know where that stops being a bad habit and where it becomes a real issue. My brother has been diagnosed with it, and I really think my mom has it too (it's still a relatively new thing; my brother was diagnosed in the early 80s when hardly anyone had heard of it). So I wonder how much of how I am is organic (is that the right word) and how much is environmental. I just know that I worry about going to a doctor and I don't want to be on meds.

There is no shame to being on medication. Noone has to know.

For me, it's more about side effects. It seems like with so many meds, the side effects suck. I already take multiple things for my asthma and thankfully the side effects are minimal, but they are still annoying.

Re: Mental Illness Poll
I have battled with bouts of depression since I very young. I have always felt like a misfit, even though I had friends. I was convinced that my wedding was going to be a big party that people came to because they were friends with my family and not me and that I could leave the room at my wedding and no one would know or care where I went.

PTS disorder leading to depression Post Tramatic Stress
Still got it.
Still have vivid and horrid nightmares of planes falling from the sky, the screams of people dying, burning bodies, and the struggle to save the life of my friend who died at the WTC. Also survivors guilt with the fact Im still here and shouldnt complain about a simple knee injury. This is an issue for my doctors as my knee injury to them is not as simple as I want it to be.
Going to a shrink is an option but the way the Workers Comp adjuster sounds when I say I am thinking of it, sends me into deeper depression and I havent gone. She makes me feel like Im faking it or stupid.

I had a huge anxiety attack on Sunday, then Monday I was sooo depressed...I suffer at times too...I talked myself out of the Sunday episode, I have had bad anxiety in the past --but I take a small dose of celexa and it helps. I feel better after seeing all these posts though! Sad that we suffer from this stuff..My mom has it, one of my brother's have it, and my father has had it....and both my grandmothers....Once it was soo bad I lost about 3 dress sizes...

Re: Mental Illness Poll
I have suffered with bouts of depression for the last several years. They got worse after I was laid off from a job that I loved several years back and then got a new job with the most horrible boss that you could imagine. I had to start seeing a therapist at that point and that has helped but I still wrestle with feelings of depression and loneliness. Sometimes I feel as if my friends really aren't my friends and that I can't let them see the 'real' me or they would definitely run for the hills!

Re: Mental Illness Poll
Well I've suffered with an eating disorder for what feels like most of my life. I've struggled with anorexia and bulimia for as long as I can remember. I've got it under control right now, but its a daily struggle that I need to address EVERY day.

Re: Mental Illness Poll
I def suffer from depression. I was treated for it about 6 years ago. Its is def back but I haven't done anything about it. I am also very hard on myself. I think I am the most dumbest & ugliest person on the world. A few weeks ago I even managed to convince myself that my sisters don't like me. I am not good in social situations & I cant speak in public. The fear of failure is so strong in me that it has stopped me from doing some of the things I want to do in life. Its doesnt help that I am in a job I hate.
