so we are considering mexico for our hm, and my gut really tells me that the tourist areas are pretty free of swine flu and also of the increased violence and crime of recent months (or atleast about 5 months ago i think). But i wanted to see what you girls thought? Online, there were soooo many mixed opinions. Some people were downplaying swine flu and the crime stuff in the tourist areas and some people were saying (from mexico too) that its nice that one wants to think its media hyping it up, but its not totally safe as one might think
should i go with my gut?
eta: also any girls who have gone, how was it from and to the airport since its outside of the resort then?

My mom just went to Mexico last month (Playa del Carmen). I told her she was crazy to go but she went with a few girlfriends and she said they had the time of their lives. They felt completely safe and had a greaaaaat time.

All of the beach areas in mexico are pretty safe. I think it's a great idea for a honeymoon. There's tons to do and it's soo affordable.
Oh, the ride from the airport is fine. Are there going to be guys with guns in the airport.. yes. But it's ALWAYS been like that. Most of the resorts have guards at the doors and there are also check points along the roads for cab drivers just to make sure they are staying within 'limits'. I personally loooooved Rivera Maya (Playa del Carmen) when I went. It was super safe, FH and I went into town by ourselves one time and it was fine.

i have stayed at the JW Marriott in Cancun The Palace Resort in Cozumel The Grand Melia in Cancun and hopefully for week 2 of the HM Excellence Playa Mujeres!

im not worried about going to Mexico at all... were going to Cabo... even if i got married this summer rather than next summer i would still go... as long as you dont drink anything from a tap.. i dont see any reason why you would get sick... ive never been so i dont know about how safe it is... i guess we'll have to take our chances! lol

I loved Riveria Maya. Its where I got engaged. I think Mexico is very much like DR with the idea that under no circumstance should you leave the resort without a tour guide and if you can, stay on the resort. We went 2 summers ago, before it got bad, and this is what we were told than to do.
Airports: Yes there are guys with machine guns. Whatever. Its like that everywhere now Resorts: they are usually tight on security. I LOVED the Riu Palace in the riveria maya. What an excellent resort. The food, the drinks the pools the ROOMS! If you really consider going, you need to go there. Even the beach was great. There was plenty to do at the resort, so you really didn't need to leave the resort. We did leave for the Dolphine Adventure and to visit one mayan temple. All in all, if you go, this is the spot to be. The hotel itself as a whole is beautiful.

The Swine Flu is mainly in the city. I have heard the resorts are completely fine! We are going to Cabo for our honeymoon - mainly because everywhere else was booked via timeshare but I have been to Cancun and had a grrrrrrreat time so we figured we would try the west coast! I say go for it and enjoy yourself on the beach!

Go...my friend got swine from one of her students on Long Island and it was exactly like the flu. Swine is all over so if that is your major concern don't worry about it. I've had many friends go over the last couple of months and they had a blast.

If we go, we are going to stay at the Excellence Playa Mujeres!!!!!!!!
I am ok with guards with guns, lol, i know that sounds funny but ive been to DR and i am ok with that because in the first place I know that its not an island that you want to be travelling outside of the resort with a guide and i plan for that ahead of time. I know some people arent ok with islands like that and thats ok too.
Yeah, i think im gonna go with my gut and do it!

I went years ago(10 - years wow) and had fun the beaches where great , but I would not leave the tourist sites we did, not on purpose and I was terrified!
