Where do I go to get a dog checked to see if she has a microchip? For those of you that don't know, I posted Sunday that I found a dog. We love her but are fearful of becoming too attached only to have her owner finally find her so we want to get her checked soon.
Any help would be appreciated!

My cat has one.. it's located on the back of his neck - you really have to feel around for it.. it's very tiny.
The North Shore Animal League puts them in their pets before adoption, so if they get lost they can find out who owns them..
I would check out the NSAL first.. good luck!!! I hope you find her owners!!

Re: Microchips in Pets
My dog has a microchip, and her vet has a scanner that can read it. So, you could call local vets and ask if they have that kind of scanner.
Also, definitely try local shelters. Since they get a lot of strays, it'd make sense for them to have a scanner. (Though they may not always have the funding for one, I guess.)
Good luck! I hope everything works out for the best.

I think all Vets & Pounds/Shelters are supposed to have the scanners.. i'm sure just place a few calls.. also, you can call Avid and see where the closest scanner to you is.

Not if she keeps barking like she was this morning! We'll get tossed out of the building...although that is infinitely preferable to what is going on next door...
Thank you guys, I'll call around.

Re: Microchips in Pets
I never heard of such a thing.
How scary they are doing this. Sorry but what does this mean for humans someday??
I have always heard of the government implanting chips in humans to follow them, know their medical history, etc.
Now they are doing it on pets. I mean it makes sense, and is a great idea for the pets. But it scares me for the future of the human race.

My dog has one, but the owner has to be registered in order to track them down.

How long has North Shore Animal League been putting the chips in their animals. I adopted 2 kittens 3 years ago, does this mean they have chips. North Shore never said anything to me about that.

I adopted my cat about 4 years ago and they never told me. I found out one day by feeling his neck and wondering what this lump was that I was feeling.. (it was very tiny).. I took him to my local vet and the Dr. said it was a chip and asked me where I got him from.. I told him NSAL.. My Dr. took an xray of my cat and showed me his chip.. it's pretty cool..
NSAL started putting chips in their animals a while back - longer than 4 years ago. I guess it's so if your animal gets lost they can track the owner down.. all your info gets stored when you adopt your pet.
I think it's a great idea.. I happy to know if he ever gets lost or someone finds him, they can track me down..
