Microwave above stove or on the counter?

Microwave above stove or on the counter?

Are their advantages and disadvantages to each??

I don;'t know much about either only that if something happens with your microwave, it's alot easier to just replace the countertop one with a new one.. but I'm sure that you could do the same with an over the stove one..

I can tell you that being that I have an over the stove one, it's alot easier to maneuver both the stove, oven and micro all at one.. and it leaves more counterspace for other appliances..

Are you looking to get a new kitchen?

I agree with Marcella. I love having it over the stove. It saves a lot of counterspace and it is more convenient IMO

we're going to have to get one over the stove because we don't have the counter apce for it on the counter....but i do think it would make life more convenient....
are they more expensive over the stove though?
everytime i price them, it seems like they are.....
anyone know?

Over the stove ones are way more expensive but we do not have the counterspace for a counter one. Plus, I like the intergrated look of the over the stove. I dont have it yet so I cant say its good or bad but I think i remember Claud saying she was not happy with it.

I live in an apt, and I have limited counterspace, so I have mine on a wooden microwave cart.

I have had mine over the stove almost everywhere I lived...and its great!!!

If the kitchen is big enough you could put in a microwave cart somewhere...but then it is not in the same cooking area...

Our microwave is mounted above the stove, and I don't I like it there. If I'm boiling a big pot of water or frying something on the stove, it's a pain (and probably a little dangerous) to reach over to use the microwave.

All but one of my previous homes had this set up...maybe I'm in the minority not liking it!

One of my apts have the microwave mounted under cabinets. No loss of counter space, no additional expense (it was a regular microwave that was mounted with a bracket).

I like it better on the counter, but only because I'm short and having it above the stove is a pain in the butt for me.

Totally go with above stove.... you will be so greatful when you have that extra counter space to prep food and what not... it is the best way to go.

Advantage: Yes more counter space and looks nice.

Disadvantage: If you are boiling water your microwave will sweat back onto your range. It is also hot on your arm when you are reaching for the microwave and cooking simultaneously. I have this problem now but the extra counter space is a definite plus.

We were going to get one in our kitchen, but since we had to get a 24inch stove vs the standard 30 inch stove, we didn't get it. The over the oven micros only come in 2 sizes and neither was 24 So we decided against it. We ended up having the cabinet guy make us an above counter microwave cabinet.

I have my microwave above my stove, and I luv it there. It's out of the way, gives you more counter space, and it's convienient.

I have one above the stove, and LOVE it. It gives me more counter space, something I have very little of.

When we had our kitchen redone this year we went with the microwave over the stove. The extra counter space is definitely worth it. I haven't had the problems with reaching over boiling water etc..not sure why, but I just turn on the fan on the microwave and it's fine.

I vote for someplace else.
I like what Marcela did-she got it off the counter but it's not over her stove. Most cabinet manufacturers are making beautiful wood range hood covers now

& ideal kitchen design says microwave over the range is a little dangerous & not really convenient for average height(or shorter)people so now we are designing kitchens with 'built in ' microwaves at a lower height

So since your house is brand new & you're starting from scratch I think you should do what's most current in design

mine is on the counter now, but I've got plenty of counter space-when we build our dream kitchen it will be built in.

looking at those kitchens dare to dream.....

Anyway I couldn't get the over the counter microwave because we didn't have enough clearence over our stove for it but I wanted one at the time. They are way more expensive but I hate having it on the counter. So I put mine on a microwave cart that I use for storing some baking stuff under. It is off my counter, but still easy to use.

If I was building a new kitchen I would get an outdoor- vented oven hood instead. I LOVE how they look.

Kelly I LOVE LOVE LOVE that second kitchen you posted.

Our microwave is above the stove and I love not having it on the counter, especially since we don't have much counter space And no space for a microwave cart.

You are supposed to be diligent about using the vent fan which I admit I am not and have not had any problems (knocking wood now:D)

Jenn There is NO WAY that you are shorter than ME, and I have no problem w/an over-the-stove micro, with regard to height!

I LOVE the fact that my micro does not take up useless counter space, so that is a plus!
But, I have found that the exhaust fan in the micro is definitely NOT as powerful as a regular exhaust hood. JMO.

Truthfully, I am second guessing having a microwave at ALL - it is the LEAST used appliance in our kitchen, and becoming more of a waste of space even above the stove!

Re: Microwave above stove or on the counter?

If I had a kitchen the size as the ones above, I wouldnt put the microwave over the stove either. Ive seen it in islands and think that looks great while being very easy to reach. But dream on Stefanie..i dont have space for a garbage can no less an island :
