Re: Turkish Tradition

The first time I met DH's parents, they gave me a cup of Turkish coffee. I normally take my coffee with a LOT of sugar but I didn't want to embarrass myself because they didn't offer me sugar.

So I drank about half of it, grimacing the whole time. Then I figured, do it like a bandaid and get it over with.

So I downed the rest of it. No one told me there was a 1/4 inch of coffee grinds in the bottom.

We're Middle Eastern and do this too...my aunt does it, and it's super entertaining...especially when she's had 'extra' to drink.

This reminds me of the first time I had real ginseng at JW's moms place. We were visiting her in NYC and she had made a ginseng soup from the real ginseng root that costs hundreds of dollars.

She gave me a BIG bowl and I choked it down. I barely avoided gagging, it was so strong and nasty. As soon as I put the bowl down, she came back and filled it again saying 'good girl!'

That was the beginning of a long and difficult relationship....

I should have watched Joy Luck Club before I met her. Things would have been easier from the beginning. LOL
