I was wondering if anyone knows how much is involved with having your last name replace your middle name after you are married?

I didn't have a middle name, but after the wedding, went to SSA and filled out the form, moving my maiden name to my middle - they changed it with no questions asked!
I'm confused! Does this apply to those of us who are keeping their maiden name??? I never thought of getting rid of my middle name.
Help me.

I am totally going to do this as well. There are all girls in my family and I want to surprise my dad by changing my middle name to my maiden name. I think he will be very happy =)

I have always hated my middle name (Ruth - no offense to anyone named Ruth here) and my maiden name is the same as my real dad and his family of deadbeats that I have nothing to do with and don't care to have anything to do with. Needless to say I am taking FH's last name and am VERY ready to do it so I don't have the deadbeat last name anymore.
My question is this: Can I drop both the middle name and the maiden name and create a NEW middle name? Like say, Elizabeth or Katherine (names I have always loved)? Anyone ever heard of this?

I have a question about this as well...Can you do the following?...
First name, middle name, maiden name, married name?
I don't want to hyphenate my last name, but I don't want to get rid of my middle name or my maiden name...
Please advise.

Paiz: Me too. I don't want to get rid of my middle name. My middle name is Silvia. My mom's name is Laura Silvia (but the family calls her Silvia) and my Dad's name is Silvio. So it's a name that runs in the family and I would rather not change it. My Fh thinks I'm nuts! (LOL).

That's what I'm donig! I don't want to get rid of my maiden name completely but I wanted to take my DH's name. Right now we have been married for 1 month and I still haven't had the time to change my name yet, but will soon. I am doing it as:
first name, middle name, maiden name, new last name.
