Re: Middle school teachers
I play the name game with them... basicall,y, first person says, 'Susie' (or whatever their name is ). Then the second person says, 'Susie, Billy' basically adding their own name onto the end of the chain. You zig zag your way around the room and the last person has to repeat everyone's names. I usually go last and try to get all of their names. Then I have them shuffle themselves in the seats and I try to do it again. It's a great time filler, sometimes it even carries into the next day.
What's the toilet paper game??
What middle school and what subject do you guys teach? I'm 8th math at Berner in Massapequa.

What's the toilet paper game??
I take a roll of toilet paper out and explain to the class that in a moment I am going to give them a job to do. Usually they see the toilet paper and start giggling. I tell them that i am going to pass the toilet paper around and they are going to have to take enough to get the job done... usually more laughter... so as they go around, some take a little bit and some take a whole bunch... once they all have their toilet paper i tell them that now for each little square of toilet paper that they took they are going to have to tell me something about themselves! Now the smarties who took a HUGE amount of toilet paper turn all red! sometimes when i have kids in the class that have had me before, or i notice a lot of kids only took 1 piece and they are on to me, i make the person with the most switch with the person with the least...

I have also seen the 'scavenger hunt'. It says things like... Find someone with blonde hair (and the person signs) Find someone that has a dog. Find someone that is an only child. Find someone that likes ice cream. Etc. The first person done gets a prize. Each person says something about one of the people that they met... like... Jen doesn't like to eat ice cream or Mary travelled to Mexico this summer.

Re: Middle school teachers
I've done the toilet paper game with M&Ms and they love it. (I model it myself first) Then, I have them fill out an interest inventory. After they fill that out, I give them a piece of paper with about 8 questions on it. All of the questions are about me and most of them I have covered in the beginning of class when I model the M&M game.(What is your teacher's name? What is her favorite color? How many states has she lived in? etc.) I label the paper 'TEST' and I tell them that this is the hardest test they will have to take because they have no chance to study. Whoever gets the highest amount of quest. right gets a prize. As something new this year, I am having them write a letter to themselves about how they felt about school last year and what expectations they have for themselves this year. They put it in an envelope and give it to me. Then I'll give it back to them at the end of the year.
