I'm with you, babe...I've suffered with migraines since I was 12. Over the counter stuff does nothing for me and surprisingly, neither did Imitrex. But my neurologist who specializes in headache treatment gave me Maxalt and it is AWESOME. You take it at the first sign of the headache...for me, that's when I start seeing funny, my vision gets a little blurry ... and in 30 mins, it is GONE. Sometimes, a headache doesn't even happen if I catch it in time and take the meds.

Hang in there....

Re: migraines

I've taken every single presciption out there... They would take a while to work and gave me some really weird side effects... That being said...

Someone told me about excedrin migraine a while back and they are my savior i swear! Highly highly recommend!!!

ETA: Its possible you got it today from the drastic change in weather... I know that usually bothers me... I know its gonna rain like the day before it happens cuz of an oncoming migraine

I have prescription medicine, but it didn't work today. :(
I need to figure out a way to avoid getting them all together. The night FH proposed, I was in the bathroom getting sick b/c of my migraine!!!

Re: migraines

hmmm if prescriptions didn't work the only other thing I know is that they now use botox injections to relieve migraines for up to 6 months

Re: migraines

My mom gets them sometimes and they tend to be more frequent when she's stressed or hasn't been sleeping. In addition to what's been suggested above I'd just say make sure that as hard as it sounds, you get plenty of sleep the week before your wedding (esp the night before), and drink plenty of water. That should help keep your body regulated a bit. I hope you feel better today!!

Re: migraines

I've been seeing a neaurologist for my migraines for a few years now. NONE of the prescriptions he gave me helped. They oly made me feel worse, making my head feel so heavy I couldn't lift it off of the bed, amking me sick to my stomach, etc. The ONLY thing that has worked for me is Excedrin Migraine. My doc hates that I take it, but it works for me and I'm not going to let him continue to use me as a test dummy for every drug out there.

Re: migraines

I dunno why Excedrin Migraine doesn't work for me...it's a combination of aspirin, acetometephin (sp?) and caffeine, right?

From everything everyone's saying on the boards, it sounds like we each have to get different treatments and meds!

It is a very personal thing. Just like not everyone can take the same BC. Talk to your doctor and he can see what is the source of the migraines and what meds would be best. My doc had me on these pills once that are meant to lower blood pressure, but a side effect is they help migraines. They did help, but after a while I had to stop taking them because they made me sick. My Mom also swears by Maxalt, as someone else mentioned. Best thing you can do is talk to the doc.

ETA: Hope you're feeling a little better now!

I have to say, maxalt is one of the better ones...however, I usually have to take two...one of the tricks i have is when i feel a migraine coming on, or even if i think it might be a migraine, I take prescription meds immediately...I can't get out of bed and sometimes the meds don't work if you take them too late. There are scripts for migraines that you can take daily

It could be the change in weather. I have have a sinus infection for 2 weeks now. The only thing that gets rid of the headache that comes along with it is 2 excedrine and an ice cold coke.

Re: migraines

I too get debilitating migraines. Mine are hormonal which are the hardest ones to treat. I get them 2 weeks before my period and then after my period. You can try to prevent them by the hours of sleep you get, the food that you eat, supposedly exercising too. I went to a neurologist for about a year to try to treat my migraines but all the meds I've tried, Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt, Frova and Axert. The only thing that works for me when they are really bad (when I feel very sick and can't deal with anything in life) is Fioricet. it's a controlled substance and it is a barbituate. Most of the time, this stuff puts me to sleep and I will wake up with no migraine. I've noticed that b/c I have to take it so much I am building up an immunity to it so sometimes I have to take 2.

Just like you I am frightened that I will get a migraine for my wedding. There are so many causes it's crazy. Migraines do not like change with sleep or eating habits. I had to keep a diary of everything I ate and how many hours I would sleep for. Nonetheless, I have noticed that personally I cannot sleep more than 8 hours or else I am doomed to have a migraine. This may be the same for you. It's crazy b/c you have to catch it just right. Too little or too much sleep can cause a migraine for me. As far as hormones though, there is no control of that and if you are on bc pills this only makes it worse.

If you see that you are getting aura with your migraines, visual changes (I see squiggly lines before mine) i recommend you take something immediately so it doesn't progress.

Just as the other girls here mentioned, Excedrin Migraine is one of my favorite drugs.

I have also tried Verapamil (blood pressure med) which they have found helps prevent migraines but it did nothing for me and I stopped the treatment. I do not have high blood pressure.

I have heard there is a specialist in Manhasset who specializes in just migraines, nothing else. I am hoping to get his info soon and if I do I will post it on this site.

I know how you feel worrying if you will get a migraine for your wedding day. I cannot tell you how scared I am for this myself.

The other meds I mentioned above didn't work for me b/c I believe that I am allergic to something in them and they either make my migraine worse, make my head feel like it is on fire or makes my throat close.

HTH..

Re: migraines

I've been getting migraines since I was 15. My neurologist had given me Imitrex and Maxalt, which didn't work for me. He then put me on a daily prescription..Propranolol (sp?)...which is a blood pressure medication that also helps w/ migraines. That did help, but I didn't want to take it for the rest of my life. Now I find that Excedrine Migraine helps me alot. I just have to take it as soon as I feel one coming on. Everyone's body is different though, as we can see from all the remedies.

Re: migraines

Ask your doctor about Fioricet. That is what I am prescribed for my migraines. But I usually take it when I can no longer handle the pain on my own or by over the counter medicine. I do it so my body does not get accustom to it. As dumb as it may sound (home remedy) using Vicks on your forehead and temples them tying a bandana around and getting sleep also helps me.

Me too, excederin is my best friend. It's the only thing that works for me. Feel better and drink lots of water too.
