Mini-Vent ...

Just venting - please don't think I have no sense of humor after this post!
The movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out while I was planning my wedding and although I saw it and thought it was funny I am getting soooo annoyed. Since it hit theaters a year ago, people are CONSTANTLY seeking me out to tell me about their experience with the movie (where they were when they watched, how they were thinking of me the whole time, etc) and to ask me if that's how my family/wedding is/was. I know people mean well and all, but it gets tiring after awhile and sometimes it's even insulting. I mean, after an episode of the Sopranos do people seek out their Italian friends to tell them about it and ask them if that's how their family is? And now with the movie on DVD and the sitcom, I am thinking of changing my last name!! AAAGHH!

Thats not fair for people to stereo type you like that.

That movie was meant to be an exaggeration of a 'stereotypical' greek family. Although there may be some similarities in other greek families, its just as bad as somebody asking me if everyone was going to be sloshed at my wedding because I am Irish, or if the MOB was going to be at my wedding if I were Italian.

People should think a little more.

I know, I'm not mad at all, just rolling my eyes now. As soon as I hear the words 'Guess what movie I saw this weekend' I know where it's going!

in all honesty, you can substitute Greek with any ethnicity...

DH's family is from SPain and they are not much different

Demetra, the same thing happens to me. My Fh is Greek and people come up to me and ask, 'Is Peter's family like that?' I really liked the movie, but why can't people understand that not every Greek family is like that???
