Mixing powered formula- Advise needed

Mixing powered formula- Advise needed

In an effort to NOT have a formula budget that costs the same as a car payment we were using the Powered stuff. Well it clogged all of my nipples! I mean, super clogged. We made it exactly as directed but it isn't mixing well, no matter how much we shake, shake, shake. Should I use a blender or something? Of course, I am hoping that I need less and less of it as my bfing builds up but till then I would prefer NOT to pay for the pre-made stuff if I can help it.

Michele is the water hot enough when you are making it to make the powder dissolve, I used to babysit my god-sister and I use to make her formula with powder, I have never had that problem. Sorry. I wish I was at work to ask the expert mommy my GF Ronnie, she used the powder too.

We use boiled water that is super hot.

Blech That is exactly why I didn't use the powdered stuff...blech Sorry...my only advice is try the concentrated liquid instead (which is more $$ than powdered, but slightly cheaper than RTF).

My problem w/ formula is that Patrick had the runs.
I bought the ready to use formula. The cheapiest place to get those was Babies R' Us. Believe me I tried everywhere!

Costco could be cheaper but they never had the brand I was using!

Are you putting the water in first and then the powder? I put my warm (not hot) water in the bottle and then add the powder and shake shake shake. I have never had a problem with clogged nipples. We use the Advent bottle and are now using size 3 nipples but I never had a problem even with size 1 nipples.

Just my experience from mixing other powedered liquids, I usually dissolve the poweder in less liquid then needed. I found I had more control smoothing it out then I would add the rest of the liquid to dilute.

I think the problem is because the water is super hot (as you stated). My friend, who did this for her baby, told me to boil the water, let it stand until room temperature and then mix the powder. That's what I do when I go out shopping w/Gianna and I have no problem with clogged nipples. I will tell you that it gets super bubbly after doing the shake shake shake, but it doesn't clog.

my tap water gets super hot...so I just run that for a while, fill up the bottle aboout one oz, put in the powder, fill up to 6 or 8oz,cap it and shake.

no problems.

of course, we didnt start formula until 9 months old

you are starting your baby off on formula? you are not bfing? sorry I may be confused by your post

I never used super hot water, just luke warm and made the bottles as needed. I also didn't shake that much, I just shook the bottle gently, b/c I alwasy thought that too many bubbles=gas (so added mylicon drops).

I'm not sure if you mentioned the bottles/nipples that you are using. Have you tried different ones?

I am not a mommy yet but we used to use powdered formula for my niece. We never used hot water, we used room temperature bottled water. We didn't have that problem. We shook it, then poured it in a glass then poured it slowly back into the bottle (by pouring slowly it leaves the bubbles in the glass and cut down on gas)

Ick. That's why I use the ready to feed. In my opinion the cost is worth the convenience.

I agree that maybe you should try different nipples or bottles.

Good luck!
