Is it normal for my 11yr. old Grandson to say he doesn't like school? Until this year, he received a lot of A's and some B's. This yr. is the first yr. he doesn't like his teacher. Even if he had a strict teacher in past yrs. he always has liked his teachers! His first report card reflected his disinterest; Not as many A's, and more B's. Does 5th grade begin a harder course of study? What can I as a Grandmother, do to encourage him? Mary

Re: MOB/Teachers
At this age, school is not only reflecting academic pressures, but social ones as well. It may not just be educational problems that he is having trouble with, but he may be experiencing difficulties with the new-found 'boy-girl' mindset of both him and his classmates. Fifth grade is also an educational change-over. Many schools are getting the children ready for the demands of middle school. Just being there for him to talk to will be a help for him.

I appreciate your input!! Our Daughter just attended the parent teacher conference, and the teacher said she enjoys having him in class. She has labeled him a class clown, from the first day. I thought you might get a chuckle from the story I heard about that first day. The teacher told the children to write about their shoes. Our Grandson wrote, 'My shoes stink!!' And when asked to read what he wrote, his teacher said, ' That's not what your paper says!' Grandson said, 'Yes, it is.' Then the teacher said, ' We don't need any class clowns.' Well, later, Grandson told us, quite seriously, ' I should have taken my shoes off and let her smell them!!' To me he seemed a bit bewildered about his teacher's response, but we weren't there so, maybe his teacher detected something different. I have always told Grandson, 'Now listen, your teacher has a lot of kids, so try to be nice and helpful.' GOD BLESS TEACHERS!!! Our Daughter keeps on top of things. E-mails have really helped the communication lines between parent and teacher. Mary

As a fourth grade teacher, its common. 5th grade is a huge transition from 4th as is 4th from 3rd. Children are learning to make fun, and form clicks at that age...
go for a walk with him, ask him about school. Most likely he'll tell you whats really going on...
If it really is the teacher. Find out WHY. If he/she is just degrading to him, make sure that you spek with the principal

Hi again, Jenny!!! Well, I talked to Grandson this past weekend when he was here, and used some of the advice I received from LIW gals. I asked him why he doesn't like his teacher, and he said,'I never said I didn't like my teacher' and I got much the same result with the topic of liking school!! So, either I: A. Misunderstood, which I don't think I did. B. He's had a change of attitude in these areas C. He's trying to hide his true feelings, fearful that someone might expose him to the teacher?
He seems content right now; We'll see when his next report card comes out. Thanks for your input!! Appreciate it!! Mary PS Thanks for being a Teacher!!!!
