MOG etiquette

Is she supposed to wear something similar to my mom or different?

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. For example, my mother is younger by quite a few years then DH's mother. Two totally different styles.

I honestly didn't care as long as niether of them wore white!

I think it depends on your preference and theirs, my mom is going to be wearing dark red or burgandy, and my FMIL is probably going to be in some shade of blue. She's more comfortable in a lighter color, so for me I wanted everyone to be happy with what they're wearing, so I left color choice up to them...

What if you are legitimately concerned about the dress the MOG will chose? I really want the MOG and MOB to remain in the same color scheme as the rest of my wedding, the BM and MOH dresses are champagne and taupe, and I would like the MOB and MOG to wear Neutrals, soft pinks, golds, taupes, beige. How do I steer the MOG in the right direction? She is really short on money. Can i make that the parent present? I don't know what to do! Sorry to hijack

My mom and My FH mom are grown women. THey can choose what ever color and dress they want. I figure, they didn't choose my dress or my BM dresses, why should I choose theirs.

I did not tell my mom or FH what color to wear...however my mother did ask me and I went with her to look of course...and i love it, as far as MOG- I cant imagine her choosing something terrible... BUT I will probably go with her to look as well so if she does look at something awful I will sway her in another direction.

The etiquette book I have says:

'Traditionally speaking, the mother of the bride usually chooses her gown first and then calls the groom's mother to inform her of her choice, describing the dress in detail. This is done so that their dresses coordinate in style, formality and color, and do not clash, It also presents a more pleasing appearance when th etwo women are near one another, as they are likely to be in the receiving line. However, each mother is entitled to dress in the style she finds most comfortable. Unless they ask for the bride's help, there's really no need for her to be concerned. If there are step-mothers involved in the wedding, it's thoughtful to give them a call to onform them of what the other mothers are wearing.'

With all of that my BP is wearing a deep, true burgundy color. MOB is wearing chocolate brown with bronze beading, MOG is wearing celedon with celedon and white beading. The dresses absolutely coordinate in style (A-line dresses with beaded jacket over them), but fabric is way different (velvet and satin). Both women look FABULOUS and are happy with their dresses, so that is the priority for me (and making sure they didn't wear white, champagne, beige or burgundy )

My mom gets first pick of color, then FMIL gets second pick and third my step-monster gets last pick. Thats how I am doing it. FMIL totally agreed with me before I even mentioned it. She's cool like that.

I totally agree with this. I don't think that either mother should defer to another, they can wear what they want. It would be nice if they consulted each other to determine the level of formality, etc. Beyond that...
