I let my maid of honor pick her dress in the same color and fabric as the bridsmaid. I definitely wanted her dress to be different so she stands out!!
I said diff dress same color, but all my girls are actually having diff dress, same color. My MOH's dress has spaghetti straps and the others are all strapless, so it's different in that way....probably differentiate her more with her jewelry and bo-k--thinking big earrings and a bracelet for her, and small earrings and necklaces for the BMs....and her bo-k, maybe a little bigger? idk really....I also thought of maybe getting her some hair jewelry (like jeweled hairpins.....)
they're all wearing the same dresses. However, my bm's bouquets will be wrapped in the dress color while the moh's will be wrapped with the sash color. I know it's a slight difference, but I wanted them to have something unique!!
my BMs are wearing bill levkoff's 966 in euro sable with a euro champagne sash. my MOH is wearing 454 euro sable with a euro champagne sash. The ONLY dfference in the dresses in the MOH's has appliqué on the sash

My 2 MOH wanted the same dress as the other girls- they will just get bigger bo-k's
i told my MOH she can do what she wants...if she likes the dress all the other girls want she can get that but in case not she can pick something else...The florist said the MOH bok will be a little bit bigger too

For my wedding I did same dress and same color for my MOH, but its really entirely up to you, ive seen many people have the same color/fabric for the MOH but different dress. And it still looks 'nice and neat' since you mentioned you didnt want it to look sloppy. But its really just a matter of personal preferance.
My MOH has the same dress, same color as my BM's. The only difference is that on the sash, there are pink flowers embroidered on my MOH's, so that hers is a little different. She also has a slightly different BOK.
My MOH will have a different dress and a different color. My only request is the colors need to be within my theme colors.
i was going to do this too but ended up going with 1 color......i am gonna do something different with their flowers instead
