Mom's dress

Mom's dress

Okay I'm a bit conflicted on how to feel right now. Part of me is p'ed off and another part of me feels bad.
My mom is having a custom dress made, and the designer's website finally put it up on the site so I was able to see the full dress... and it's gorgeous. (she only showed me the top of it in a magazine before)
However it's also abit reminiscent of a bridal gown (just in light blue) and my FH is red with anger because he's saying that it looks like she's trying to show me up at my own wedding.
She paid a nice amount of money for it so I'm hesitant to tell her to change it, especially with the wedding less than a month away. I do know that people will feel like she's overdressed, even for the occasion, and start talking (I absolutely hate that!).
So I need some advice!! Should I tell her it's too much or just forget it and focus on everything else that STILL needs to be done.
Thankssss!!!!

i think its a little over the top...

is the dress finished? maybe you can just ask fo rthe skirt to be changed... if it was a line or straignt it wouldnt be as over the top.

jmo...hth!!!

I definitely think it is a bit much. Maybe they can tone down the poofiness and make it more a- line since it is custom made? i would definitely say something to her

Ugh yeah, I just tried dropping a hint to my dad and his response was 'So, there'll be two brides at the wedding. Don't worry, noone will get confused.' Wth!
I'm just praying she hasn't realized how poofy it is and will tell the seamstress to take it down a notch.

I agree with changing the skirt-- that would make it soooo much more appropriate and would still be pretty. IMO its just too much the way it is.

Sorry you have to deal with this

can your dad say something to your mom without you getting involved? Tell him to say that he thinks it's too much and he wants you to be the center of attention.

I think so to. If it's not done yet, maybe they can make it less poofy.

I also understand wanting to choose your battles though.

I can definitely understand that being a hard conversation to have wtih your mom, but if her dress looks like the two you included with your post, i definitely think she's gone over the top and you'd be justified in talking with her about it. i think in the end you'd be happier if you worked with her and the dress maker to adjust the style than have her wearing something that shows you up on your own wedding day.

OMG!!! I can't believe thats what she is choosing to wear. This might be rude to say... and if so I apologize ( I can be very blunt!) But THAT is RIDICULOUS!!! That is a wedding gown in light blue thats what it is. What would make her think that is appropriate. I would definitely feel like she was trying to show me up if she picked out something like that. If my step-mom pulls something like that.... watch out!!!

I don't know what you can do other than be flat out honest with her ASAP. Maybe if she knows that it bothers you she can still modify it at this point. If you wait too long then there's nothing anyone can do. Honesty is the best policy.... right??

I agree with this in order to save yourself from feeling awkward. I'm sure if your mom knew that it would make your feel upset or uncomfortable on YOUR day, she would be willing to have it altered to tone it down. GL!

That dress is a wedding dress. Tell her that you don't think it's appropriate to look like a bride on your wedding day.

Thanks for your replies =) I feel like I'm not over-reacting now atleast lol
Yeah, when she gets home from work today I'm going to find out if she knew exactly what the dress would look like, and that I would appreciate it if she altered it somehow.
I'm hoping that when I point out that people will feel like she's trying to re-live her wedding and start gossiping, she'll come to her senses.
On the bright side, my FH now fully understands why I moved out at 18

Re: Mom's dress

If this was my situation, I would tell my mom to change the bottom half of her dress. There is no need for her to have a dress that is poofier than your own. Maybe they can make it more narrow or a-line?

Please dont get mad, but I think that dress is waaaaaaaaaay over the top. I mean its beautiful, but its totally a wedding dress if it was in white.

maybe you should ask her to have the skirt pulled in a little so that its not so poofy? I mean right now it looks poofier than yours.

i showed my mom the dress and she agreed with all you girls in saying that the top of the dress is beautiful and if she changes the skirt it would look great !!

Wow, I dont think your dad should have said that. sorry again. I mean your mom got married and now its your turn, its really not fair.

If she would just change the skirt it would be fine

Re: Mom's dress

wow, beautiful dresses but I think your mom's is a bit inappropriate and I'm surprised she doesn't see it herself. I might leave it alone considering the wedding is so close but I think, at the wedding, your mom will feel uncomfortable herself seeing how overdressed she is.

omg...i dont think you can leave this alone....it i think its gonna be like having an elephant in the room. i am not trying to be disrespectful but this is your day...i think that the designer may be able to tone the skirt down a bit and that may do just fine.... the way it is now..its bigger than yours...and that can;t be!

OMG! If my mom bought that dress I would tell her to find a new dress. She is definitely trying to show you up. There are plenty of glamorous dresses out there that are not poofy and 'wedding gown-like'.
