Moms old dress....

I happened to ask my mom whether she still had her wedding dress from 35 years ago... when my dad told her it was in the attic she freaked and got really excited expecting me to do something with it.... soooo any ideas on how to incorporate parts of my mothers old dress into my day?

I thought maybe taking some of the lace and using it to wrap my bo-k? Any other ideas? If I was more talented I would try to make my own garter buuuuut I'm not very crafty!

Any ideas would be helpful :)

Re: Moms old dress....

Maybe use some material for your veil? If it looks anything like my moms, there was a ton of lace! lol

I was going to:
Wrap my bouquet
Make a flower girl basket
RB pillow
Money holder
Maybe use her viel and add the lace/beading around it.
Use the beads on her tiara/crown to make jewlery

Re: Moms old dress....

I do have my dress, plus she was like half my size and shorter than me when she got married (well I guess she is still shorter ) so its not really an option. I have to see what her veil looks like as I don't really remember.

I think there is a ton of lace so I may be able to grab some of it, and thinking of it now, it had like a collar and sleeves, so I may be able to make a shawl or coverup since my dress is strapless... buuuut I don't know how crafty I can get!

Re: Moms old dress....

If you were going to do anything with it - I would bring it to a tailor or something so that they can really make it beautiful whether it's a shawl or veil, etc.

Re: Moms old dress....

That's GREAT that she still has it. There are plenty of things you can do. I am NOT crafty AT ALL! I took my mom's lace from her veil and had a garter made at my seamstress. It is beautiful and it wasn't too tight that I thought I was going to loose blood in my leg.

You can also def wrap your bouquet in it. This can be your something old. Another idea is just take a swatch of the dress and have them sew it on the inside of your dress as a memory. OR, how about a hankercheif. If you have one made, maybe make a matching one for your mom the day of.

HTH! I LOVE using old things in the wedding that are from the family, it made me feel a little closer and not alone while saying my vows.

Re: Moms old dress....

I am wrapping my Bok with my grand mothers dress.
depending on what you are doing with your hair , you could have someone on ETSY make a fabric flower out of it. or you could have a purse made out of it.

Re: Moms old dress....

O you need to google how to make a garter and totally try that!!

Also - how anout taking a piece of it and sewing it into the skirt of your dress so that your tecnically wearing it too...even if no one can see it, the sentiment is there?

Re: Moms old dress....

I plan on using the lace from her dress and veil as a border for a handkerchief with a nice poem or saying on it.

Re: Moms old dress....

I definitely agree you can use it to make a Bo-K wrap or lace from it to make a veil or bolero. Maybe if it is very lacy you can use some to wrap around a day of clutch also?

This made me think of a kinda funny story about my moms wedding dress.
When I was about 8 there was going to be a Halloween party at school (b4 Halloween) and of course I had forgotten to tell my mom about it until like 9pm the night before, so I had no costume & was upset I'd be the only idiot not dressed up.
My mom took out her wedding dress put it on me and cut the bottom off to fit my height, and said there, you will go as a bride.
All the while this is happening my grandmother is screaming bloddy murder at her, asking why she is doing this!
My mom's feelings were she was divorced and she was never going to wear it again, so who cares!

Re: Moms old dress....

You can use some of it and incorporate it into your veil or definitely a bridal hankerchief. A bouquet wrap sounds nice as well!! So many choices!
