It seems odd. I would definitly tell them you dont feel comfortable giving them a deposit without seeing the contract first.

I thought it was really weird. We talked about everything in depth and I think I have a good idea, but without a contract how can I prove exactly what was said? I'm just surprised because they have nothing but great reviews, here and elsewhere, and were recommended by people too. Now I have to start all over again!
Did you try seeing if they would budge at all? If you tell them it's the contract first or you are not booking them, do you think they would change their stance at all? I wouldn't feel comfortable signing without seeing the contract first!
I would at least want to have it all in writing and signed at the time the money was handed over. I would not give money without signing a contract at that time.
