Money / Bills After the Wedding

Original post by sarahdavid

FH and I are very independent when it comes to paying bills and dealing with money. We have discussed what we'll do after the wedding, but we haven't come to a conclusion yet.

Have you discussed this with your FH? What are your plans for dealing with bills and money after the wedding?

We already have a plan. I am really good with money and bills so I will take care of this. FH thinks I am nutty. I live week to week on a budget and actually have an excel spreadsheet of my finances and stuff. I actually got FH on a plan to elminate his credit card debt. So far it is working. We already have a joint account which we started the week of the E Party.

I have an excel spreadsheet too - I budget everything out weeks in advance...FH thinks I'm nuts, but it helps me save!!!

We haven't even discussed this yet because we too are very independent with our money and paying our own bills (we also have it set up that he pays the mortgage and I pay all the utilities - yes uneven bu he makes double my salary!) We only have one joint account right now which is our savings for the wedding. I would be more comfortable paying the bills bc FH is so unorganized when it comes to this. It is confusing to me though too because we are both different when it comes to our money so it is going to be tough to figure it out ! i also have a lot of debt from school and i feel I should be responsible for it...I thought that this may be something that we can discuss as we get closer to the wedding..we are so overwhelmed with other stuff right now and it is the way we are doing things now is working fine. I do want us to come up with some mutual agreement though for sure. No more my money, your money - our money! (so cliche lolol )

Well at least we're not the only ones in this position. We have the same thing going with the mortgage and utilities. It works for us. I know its still a ways down the road, but its something we'll have to figure out eventually.

We are maintaining our current separate accounts and then creating a new account after we get married (to be initially funded with some of the wedding money we receive). Every month we will put a certain amount into the joint account to pay all bills, groceries, household expenses, vacations etc. and even some extra so if he is out at a store and wants to pick something up he can just do it. We will have our separate accounts too -- RH has child support payments from his prior marriage, so that is not going to come from a joint account. I still have student loan payments and quite honestly, our joint account shouldn't have to support my shoe shopping trips

I might be coming into this very differently from a lot of women on the boards -- I make significantly more than FH and it is likely that after we have a kid FH will scale back to part-time work and be more of a stay at home dad.

I have a spreadsheet too....it definitely helps because I see where all my money is going and I'm less likely to spend it.

we already opened a joint account upon our engagement to pay for the wedding..we had a savings one together before hand but dumped it all into the new one. of course we will both keep our own as well...I learned from miss Suze Orman to never have NOTHING on your own...lol Although I trust FH completely...I still want some of my own money. i already take care of all the bills now though he does make more money than me....he said...'I'll give you the money..you pay the bills'. i am an accounting manager by career anyway so it just comes naturally...I am very anal when it comes to balancing to the penny so I am good with that...

This has been hard for me. I work very hard and have saved a large amount of money in the last 5 years. I have always meant to use to towards a real estate purchase. The thought of deciding with another person how to spend that money is hard to phantom sometimes. I make very good money and recently was looking at purchasing a very nice brand new car and FH sort of talked me out of it even though I can afford it and I save a lot every month. My parents always shared everything - they had a 'what's mine is yours way of approaching things' - they were and still are a single unit in every way. I hope I am able to do the same.

Re: Money / Bills After the Wedding

Right now we have separate cc and bank accounts. We set up a joint checking and savings for the wedding which has been opened since Feb- slowly growing. I have substantial debt for vet school while Brian has none for grad school (its good to be a science phD), so right now I pay lower rent then him (I give him a check for rent/ultilties every month for the house we rent), but in the end we are pretty equal in montly expenses as I have my monthly loan amount to pay. brian prob makes 20% more than I do.

After the wedding, I think we will pool our money, but I think we will keep what we had before we got married. I am fiancial thinking ahead person in the group and brian is more in the present. We are both savers so that good!

Kids- I am undecided. But I spent 8 years getting my degree to pratice medicine and I don't plan on not doing that!

On a side note- I want to do a residency which if I ever get one (fingers crossed) I will be making next to nothing for 3 years and brian will be the main support which stresses me as I like to be independent,
