i was wondering, i am planning my bridal shower and my fiance and i have been living together for 5 years. we don't need any house hold stuff so we were thinking of a NO BOXED GIFT bridal shower. Is this rude and if so what should we do. we are paying for the wedding ourselves and our honeymoon is a gift from a friend.i just don't know what to do. thanks so much girls-

Re: money bridal shower???
Did you have an engagement party too? I dunno, it might be asking too much b/c you do also get money from people at a wedding. We are also paying for the wedding ourselves and have been living together for 2 yrs....but we are still registering at bed bath and beyond... you can always use a nice dining set What about doing like a honeymoon registry or something?

i think you should register for some stuff, you can always 'Upgrade' the stuff you have now! Or a honeymoon registry

Re: money bridal shower???
IMHO, it isn't a gracious thing to ask of your friends and family...there was a post on here a while back about a wedding invite that stated 'no boxed gifts' and there was a lot of drama (if I remember correctly!) about it. A lot of girls said that a gift is a gift and people give what they can, that you can't ask for cash gifts because it defeats the meaning behind giving a gift and it was rude of the bride to put that on her wedding invite etc... If you don't need anything I wouldn't have one...sorry I don't mean to be harsh, it's JMHO.

We were in the same situation you're in. DH and I have been living together for awhile and we have everything. I don't know what was put on my shower invites but I got mostly gift cards to Sears and Home Depot (we are remodelling). Maybe you can ask for gift cards instead of no box gifts. I think it sounds a little better. At least with gift cards you can use it whenever you like and buy whatever you need when it comes up.

I really think its a no no to ask for money. Create a registery, maybe china? Or register for a honeymoon. Or if you plan on buying a home register at home depot.

IMO you should register for something......I don't think there is a proper way to ask for money.
Why dont you register for a honeymoon & then ask the friend to give you money that was originally going to pay for the honeymoon.

Re: money bridal shower???
I wouldnt ask for cash for a bridal shower, alot of ppl are not going to like this or just feel uncomfortable by this. I never heard of anyone doing this. Even for e-party you cant specify that you prefer something and even for wedding same thing.
I understand you guys live togther for a long time but you definitely can upgrade most things you have. I moved into my apartment 4 years ago and while its pretty new, theres still tons of things i can add or upgrade. Theres more to a registry than just china, glasses, silverware and the typical things. I had TONS of things on my registry that a normal household doesn't have. Just a few things to consider. Then theres some things that others just dont buy for themselves.
here are some things i had on registry that i can say not EVERY household has or might need a new one A new coffee machine kitchenaid mixer ice cream maker panini grill quesadilla maker deep fryer sake glasses 3-tier swivel buffet server wine chiller chrome drink mixer fonduet set rice cooker crock pot bbq pit flyte plates sushi plates pizza oven wine refrigerator 3 part rectangular dish, the all glass modern ones bed tray palau wood wine rack and the list goes on, theres many serving pieces you can find that you don't have. Check crate and barrel they have many different styles and not your typical stuff
also theres nothing wrong with upgrading your towels, sheets, comforters. After a few years you can always use new ones or adding to your collection
new vaccum
or maybe buying stuff that you would never get yourself bc of price, which alot of ppl have done. Such as expensive pots and pans, or china
PLUS the point of a bridal shower is to shower the bride with gifts, so this takes away the whole purpose. Guests do expect to bring you gifts and you to open them.

Re: money bridal shower???
I understand not needing the standard bridal shower gifts, but I think people would be very turned-off by the suggestion that money is wanted.

I completely agree with this. You can always upgrade your stuff as well.

i think it's extremely tacky to have a $$$ shower, and theres always more new stuff yu could register for. worst case register at BBB and return it for cash

Re: money bridal shower???
I really don't think it's a good idea to do the no boxed gift idea and ask for money; I think it might tick a lot of people off, especially those who may give a gift that they can afford etc., and may cause a lot of unneeded drama. Go find something cool you normally wouldn't buy for your home and put it on a registry haha

ITA. If you really think about it, I'm sure there are some things that you need for your home....I do understand because I was in the same situation, but specifically asking for cash only gifts is super super rude.

Re: money bridal shower???
Honestly, i came from a wedding and the bride had your situation. They registered for nothing cuz they wanted money. Everyone got the point because they got money from some, but at the same time it can backfire on you because some people may not have money like that to give & you may end up getting nothing! register for new things you may want just in case or risk getting nothing.

We're in a similar situation and we're using the bridal shower as a way of updating our stuff. I think people would find it rude if the invite read 'no boxed gifts'. JMHO

Re: money bridal shower???
i went to a shower last year where the bride didnt register for anything except for her honeymoon. And it was kinda hinted that she wanted stuff for her honeymoon or cash. So i went and purchased a gift card to bed bath and beyond. I didnt like the idea and imho thought it was kinda tacky

Re: money bridal shower???
if u dont want gifts then there is really no need to have a bridal shower. we were in the same situation where we lived 2gether, so i just registered for things to upgrade our old stuff.
