money bridal shower???

Original post by anntesty

i was wondering,
i am planning my bridal shower and my fiance and i have been living together for 5 years. we don't need any house hold stuff so we were thinking of a NO BOXED GIFT bridal shower. Is this rude and if so what should we do. we are paying for the wedding ourselves and our honeymoon is a gift from a friend.i just don't know what to do.
thanks so much girls-

if u dont want gifts then there is really no need to have a bridal shower.

Agreed - shower is not about giving money its about showering gifts to the new couple. If you get money is kinda a plus. But, some places allow you to register for gift cards so that might work in your case but i would just figure if you need upgrades do a handful of those if you want a shower.

after the wedding I'll be moving in with FH. Considering that he's a big boy and hasn't lived with his mother in quite some time he already has plenty of stuff for the house. I, however, decided that i want all NEW stuff!! I mean, he's a GUY so of course there's still a lot of things he doesn't have that we need, but even the stuff he does have... i just think it'll be nice to get new dining wear and so on for our new life.

We lived together too, and lived on our own for a few years, so we had 'stuff' but we upgrated most of it. Our crappy old pots and pans were replaced with a new set (which we love!!), we got new dishes, china, new glassware, some cool gadgets we never had, and serveware like platters, etc.

i know you might prefer cash, but i dont think a shower is the place for it. people expect you to open gifts .... would you just open envelopes of cash?

I would think in that case that you wouldn't have a shower at all. I don't think you can put limits on the presents people give you unless you ask people to make a donation to a charity instead of gifts.

FH and I are in the same predicament kind of. We both have our own places, so we have a lot of duplicate stuff actaully. We did register and you'll find that there are a lot of things you can register. As mentioned before by other girls, upgrade items, wish list items. I just had my shower and while we got many boxed gifts we also got gift cards and money.

I think the right thing to do is register.

i personally wouldn't recommend writing no boxed gifts because it looks really tacky and it always comes across that way though it was put with the most genuine of reasons like yours..

register for like 10 items.. and then when those things fly out, people will end up giivng you cash gifts.. jmo

I've never seen cash given at a shower ( but I've only been to 2 NY showers). If you don't register, people will give you gift cards (useful) or stuff you don't want (not so useful). I'd either register, or not have a shower.
Also, you could have a theme shower. I've seen a stock the bar shower: people bring wine, etc.; or a honeymoon shower , people give baskets with towels, flip flops, or just a lingerie shower. Who doesn't want more lingerie?!?!

i'm in your same situation and i decided to not do a shower. we don't want to upgrade anything until we move which won't be for another 2-3 years at most and we didn't want to do the honeymoon registry cause we're not sure where we're going yet. plus i just don't like the honeymoon registry thing, JMO.

i think it's extremely tacky to have a $$$ shower, and theres always more new stuff yu could register for. worst case register at BBB and return it for cash

i agree 100%

This may sound taky, but what I did is I registered for several things that I did not want and then returned them. We've been living together for a long time too. Bed, bath and beyond gives you money back as long as the item is in your registry.

it's better then straight out asking for money.

I would upgrade stuff and maybe not make the biggest of registries. Maybe then people would lean towards giving cash and you won't have to ask for it. I think 'No box gift' is inappropriate.

I wouldnt ask for money, i would register for an upgrade of everything you already have, or get new stuff that you dont have.

I personally wouldn't do it. Something about that just don't sound right.

Register for something really expensive and hope people will give you money instead.
