Money Money Money

I've been very good and have not complained but ....

My church requires a bapitsimal certificate in order to get married. Fine. But they need a BRAND NEW one from the old church, not the one I have in my files. FINE. So I call the old church to request it. #1 They won't do it over the phone, I need to write a letter and #2 They charge a $10 donation! I know it's only $10 but come on, why does EVERYTHING for the wedding cost money????
Meanwhile, FH's church didn't charge him anything!

I don't really understand the problem, if you are unable to make that donation they would probably waive it for you. They charge that much because none of it is on computer and they have to look and search in huge books (well in most cases) plus you pay for your wedding liscense for them basically to do the same thing except the town actually pays someone to do that job every day when normally a parish doesn't.

I really didn't mind my church's donations, I had an amazing mass, a great priest, a great organist and singer and on top of it all a sacrament (which naturally the donation didn't go towards but it still costs money to open the church on the weekend for only an hour or so) which bonded my husband and myself.

If you look in the grand scheme of things most church's donations aren't really that extreme. It's just a shame many people don't think to donate to the church so that now they have to suggest donation amounts. Most have some flowers up already, give you pretty backdrops for outdoor pictures, and some even offer unity candles.

My church donation cost less then my favors did so I didn't see the big deal.

BTW! The Enchanted Florist is Awesome, very good pick! We got an awesome deal from them and were very happy.... his grandbaby was born the morning of our wedding!

Im not sure if it's just my church, but both batismal and communion certificates need to be dated no earlier than 6 months before the wedding date. If it is a day over 6 months, my new church will ask me to get both documernts again. I would check into that before you go ahead and ask for them. Good luck, I know how frustrating it could be!!

It's not really a problem, it's just all these 'hidden' costs and 'suggested' donations. I completely understand about it being a building and it need cost to run it, I just don't understand how one church charges and one doesn't. I have every intention of donating to both the church I am getting married in and the church where my priest is from (they are different). I guess I just get annoyed at surprise costs, again $10 not a huge deal, I just wish they would use the document I already have at home.

070502- I think it's a different Enchanted Florist. Mine is in Maspeth, Queens and his has no grandkids yet. I think they are two others in Howard Beach and one in Brooklyn ...

Diva - I will definitely check into that 6 month thing ...

Defintiely check the 6 month thing. I thought I was so organized and got my baptismal certificate before meeting with the priest. It was dated 6 months and two weeks from our wedding date so it was no good. Had to get a new one. Except my donation was only $3.00, (FH's church charged $5.00).
