Money Vent-Kind Of

So FI's parents surprisingly contributed $5,000 to our wedding. They just sent a letter/check to my parents saying to put it toward the wedding.

My mom is planning on calling tomorrow to thank them. But should she specify what this money will go toward? Or should she leave it vague?

I guess the problem is that there is only a limited things that cost $5000 or less. They are the officiants, the post party, and the ceremony/cocktail music. I imagine that the invites and favors will also, but that doesn't seem appropriate considering my parents are the hosts.

What do you think? I thought that they could pay for the officiants and the post-party. But FI thinks that his crazy father will go crazy because he doesn't believe in religion and thinks an after party is insane. I reallly don't care what his nutty father thinks but I also want to preserve the peace.

I don't think that you need to specify. Just have your parents thank them for their contribution to both of their children's big day and that the money will be well spent.
